Filter for older Constellation???

Do they still make the filter for the older Constellation? It's a cloth filter, about 15 inches in diameter that straps over the motor housing inside the bag chamber. I have not been able to find any replacement at any vac supply on line or locally.

Has anyone found any of these? If not, what have some of you used with older Constellations as replacements?

I have actually used T-shirt material or cheese cloth with several lays folded.

That's what I used too -- 4 layers thick of cheesecloth.

Terrycloth polishing bonnets from your favorite discount or auto parts store also work well. R.J. Vanik had an article about them in one of the newsletters a few years back. I have one in my 858 and it does a fine job. But my 82 Connie has the ORIGINAL filter in it, and I just clean it every now & then.

I have 3 older Constellations: A model 82, 84 and I'm not sure of the model number but it's orange and chocolate brown. They all in great shape. I have the full set of attachments for the 84 all in great shape. For the 82 I have most of the attachments but the hose is not in great shape. The orange and chocolate brown came only with the hose but it is practically like brand new. I have a delux set of brown attachments for a similar color Hoover Convertible but, of course, no rug nozzle.

And they all have the filters in them; but, they are dirty.

Jeff, how do you clean the filter for your model 82? I have vacuumed them very well, but still it doesn't seem to do the trick. I have not used the Model 82 at all. The Model 84, I have used and it has a funny odor; not a putrid odor but a kind of motor oil odor --- hard to describe.

The orange and brown one I just opened the other day. I got it from an eBay sale almost a year ago but never opened the box because mom was so sick I just couldn't fool with it then. So I put the box in the closet and left it.

A few days ago I opened it. The vacuum is beautiful, not a scratch or dent on it; the rubber trim is in excellent shape and it purrs like a kitten. But the filter is ....FILTHY!!! I vacuumed it thoroughly, but to no avail.

I will probably try both the cheese cloth and the terry cloth solutions to see which works best for me; but I would like to preserve the original filters for collector sake if I could clean them. So I'd be interested to know, Jeff, how it might be done.

I believe that I may have one of those filters. I recall it being made of a material very similar to interfacing which is used in collars and cuffs of men's shirts. I will check for you when I get home from the convention.

Hi Bruce,

Your brown & orange Connie is a model 858. I have one too, and an 82 as well. However, I'm afraid I can't help you much as far as cleaning the original filters is concerned. Never done anything to the one in my 82 other than vacuuming it. Hopefully someone else in the club will have an answer for this one. I do know that if you use the terrycloth polishing bonnet for a filter, you can just toss it in the washer when it needs it.
As for the odor from the 84, you will probably notice the same odor coming from your 82 and 858 when you run them as well. It's what I call the "famous Connie smell!" I don't know what causes it, but EVERY Connie I have ever run, whether my own or someone else's, no matter how old,has that characteristic smell to it. Not a bad odor, just something noticeable.
And by the way, that's a nice picture of your 82 Connie. A beautiful machine!
And John, enjoyed the picture of your Connies, too. And it was great meeting you at the Convention.

Hi there. I think that the UK Connie filters will fit yours. We had the model 82 and 86 (822 and 862) amongst others. I enclose a link to a current eBay UK auction for a filter. Looks like a replacement, not genuine Hoover, but might be worth trying?

You probably already sorted this out but...

The purpose of the motor/fan intake filter is, of course, to catch any fine dust that escapes the bag seal or in case of 'bag burst'' accidents. To this purpose it can be any porous but tightly woven material. Original Constellations used a thin wool/cotten slub felt sheet circle, held in place first by a metal band with a spring, and the side hose models used a simple wire coil spring (that I find NOT easy to put on).

Were I to have to replace my Connie's motor filters I would go to the fabric store and get some light brown Moleskin. Its a fuzzy backed cloth often used for vintage upright bags. Perhaps one could find a similar slub felt there, too. If you can breathe through it, it's the right stuff.

But in a pinch simply cut a 12.5" to 13" circle out of a paper vacuum bag.

'Course, the first thing to do is check the tightness of the rubber seal to the bag's cardboard to keep that blowby dust to a minimum, right?
