There was no 'standard' back then.
Yup, it wasnt until before the great depression if I remember right, that the UL classifications and requirements for electric appliances started appearing. The UL requirements are what started standardizing electric appliances to follow a particular code and way of building appliances, in order to protect the consumer from danger.

Underwriters Laboratories are the insurance companies dictating standards trying to reduce insurance payouts. It was founded in 1894 as the Underwriters' Electrical Bureau. They published their first formal standard in 1903. People today do not realize that in the 19th Century several American cities burned down from fires that started in buildings and spread across many city blocks. Chicago, Boston, Sacramento and others all suffered huge urban fires. UL was an insurance industry attempt to write standards that would reduce the risks of such fires and the big insurance payouts inherent.
