When the fantom upright was first sold I know that it did not have the hepa filter, so I was wondering what it had in its place, was it just a foam filter? and if anyone has a fantom with the standard exhaust cap, how does it preform? I imagine it did not preform well. And does anyone have an extra one they don't need because I would like to have one.

Thanks

Scott

I was wondering this too. It seems that there must have been some kind of filter. I do know that the HEPA filter came out by Fall/Winter 1994 as my JcPenney catalog from then mentions that there was a new HEPA option. So I'd say it was 2 or 3 years after the Fantom came on the market that they added the HEPA filter.

Fantom

I have an original, and there was no filter. The Dual Cyclonic technology was supposed to filter out enough dust to make it usable. I have heard that is not really the case, that they blew dust all over the place, but there was just a plastic piece that snapped on over the exhaust if you were not using the Hepa Filter add on. In my videos on youtube, under FantomVacuumFan, there are a few videos showing my original Fantom, and I show you the piece, and where it goes etc. I will attach a link below to the video that shows it the best, as 2 or 3 of my videos show it. Either watch the entire video, or skip to 2:53 to see the piece.

Here's a picture of a Kenmore Destiny Plus (same as a Thunder) without the filter. Also has the early 11 amp motor. This whole subject gives the lie to the efficiency of Dual Cyclonic blah blah blah. Without the filter, you can see the dust in the exhaust.

The gold sticker is from a local vac shop.
