The Good Old Days!

The Kenmore Bug Eye!

But all joking aside...this dress is not a good example, but I can remember when people took pride in the way they looked. You would never go shopping or to church without changing into good clothes. You dressed to fly, you dressed to go out to eat, you took pride in yourself.

My eyes take a beating daily here...looking out to into the Wal-Mart store from my office...people must get out of bed, not look into a mirror, grab their cell phone and head out for the day....

The first bank I worked for and this is not a joke, we were told that we represented the bank 24/7. So if we were out and about in town we needed to be dressed respectfully. I never left the house to go shopping without wearing a shirt and tie. My how times have changed. I won't to this day go to church to practice, choir practice, or any church function without wearing dress cloths..including a tie!

After having a couple of days off work, I look forward to getting back into a nice shirt, tie, dress pants and nice shoes. Don't get me started on cell phones...

Call me old fashioned...

Morgan

Morgan,
I completely agree with you about most people not caring about how they go out into public. I may not dress up to go shopping, but if it is after work I am in a neatly pressed uniform and if not I at least wear clothes that are not wrinkled and match, not to mention weather appropriate.
When I was in J.C.Penney, and Wal-Mart yesterday there were people wearing pajama pants and bleach stained tops with holes and flip flops, most of them also looked like they have not bathed in a few days or bathe in a deep fryer they were so greasy looking. I also never go to a church function or funeral parlor with out wearing dress clothes, unless I am coming from work then it is my uniform.

And with cell phones I can oly imagine what it is like for you to deal with customers while they are on the phone, I have dealt with patients who are on the phone while we are trying to perform an exam on them.

Well I seem to be that average teenager then. lol.

me- well I am right now in a Led Zep 1979 concert t-shirt (a new one not from 1979 ;) and some kaki shorts with Vans skate shoes.

Frankly I love getting dress to go to work at JPMchase, home
loan division. Except my idea of dress up (thank god the bank
agrees ) is wearing casual dress up. Dockers a decent shirt
that I wear not tucked in (very stylish, currently). I feel
totally dressed up compared to some of the slobby clothes some of the Straight younger guys wear ! Wrinkled, holes in them.
It' so sad and so far from from a coat and tie. I used to have to wear coat, white shirt and tie every day (long sleeved, too I might add) to a couple of retail jobs I had in
my first career life. Then have to work unloading trucks, as well as rearranging 2nd floor stockrooms. Then look clean
and neat to work until close on the floor helping customer.
I HATED it !!! If I never wear a tie again, it will be too
soon !!
Sorry guys, just had to vent !!!

Isn't this the girl every man dreams of marrying?

I'm thinking 'Elaine Lancaster' ain't got no lady parts but if that's what every man dreams of marrying then we're in a whole heap o trouble. :-) I'll take the Bug Eye, thanks.

Vacuum ads...

...don't you just love the blatant -ism's in vintage ads? "Her husband treats her to the most up-to-date appliances?" and how lucky she is?

Today, hubby would have bug-eye indentations upside his head if not up elsewhere if he were to say "It's your lucky day, honey, I got you a new vacuum!"

A spec listing for a vintage kitchen appliance stated "For Men Only."

An ad for a dishwasher...African-American in a maid outfit saying "I's gots a good job now!"

One of my fav's was a recent POD for Hoover at Christmas. "For many a year husbands have picked the Hoover as Christmas Present No. 1" and goes on about how sentimental and "sane" it is. Sane? These days, it'd be more like suicidal!

Wolfson Museum...

I have not yet visited the Wolfson Museum in Miami to see what other interesting vintage things they may have on display in addition to the Kenmore Bug-Eye.
Elaine Lancaster is not only a lucky gal but a tall one too! ;-D

Morgan, Sam, jdinstl -

When I first moved to Portland, Oregon in 1994, I remember looking out the front window early on a Sunday morning. I could not BELIEVE the way people who were arriving for mass at the Catholic church across the street: shorts, flip-flops, sandals, cut-offs, dirty tennies. I suppose the church was grateful that they were at least GOING to church.

And dressing for the office: I spent a total of 15 years in various lawfirms, and have also worked in other kinds of offices for about that long as well. I am personally glad I do not have to wear a tie anymore, but I can identify with your comments about what people DO wear in public. When I was a kid, my mother and I would go downtown to The Emporium on Market St. in San Francisco. You did not dare go downtown without getting dressed up. My mother actually wore a hat and GLOVES. Of course, that was more than 50 years ago. Now you're lucky if most folks are wearing underwear.

BTW...the Bugeye is missing a bumper, it appears. I actually think that IS a woman, but not totally sure.

And, jdinstl: you're right. I can't imagine any man chancing giving a gift of a vacuum for any occasion, not unless he wanted to get beaned by it. I know older people who told me that they used to think that the Christmastime vacuum ads were stupid back then as well. Personally, I would have been THRILLED with a Hoover under MY tree! John L.

Uggg I can't stand dressing up anymore. For almost 25 years the daily suit tie thing. My final 5 or so years went business casual, khakis and golf type shirts, whew.

John, same here with the dressing up as a kid to go to town although we only lived in this then even smaller town my mom would dress me in gray flannel pants and white shirt whenever we went on the bus downtown and especially if we went out of town to a big city for the day. Mom always wore her gloves and a hat as well being the proper English woman. That went on until I was about 8-9 and I realized I was the only kid ever having to get dressed up anymore.

I just noticed......

The bug-eye IS missing the bumper, the original bag, and bag clip end caps. ...and this is a valuable museum piece? Makes those of use who have bug-eyes with the original parts lucky guys. I believe lucky gal Elaine may be missing some female parts as well....LOL
