Thought it would be a great idea for us all to share the Vacs we now have in our collections that family members had or have.

To start it off heres the Senior cleaner my Great Gran had from since I could remember to 1996.

Ok - I'm game. This President belonged to my grandmother (moms side). Mom bought it for her shortly after she started work in 1946. Up till that time Grandma had never had one. She never replaced it either, using it about once a week till she went into a home in 1990. The fact that it still looks like new (Even the hose is still flexible) is testament to the way she treated her appliances.

This Goblin belonged to my other grandmother (dads side). It was purchaced in the mid 1940's to replace her hoover. (At the time my grandfather was caretaker of the courthouse here and they lived in the suit on the top floor) The hoover was rather useless as it was entirely hardwood floors where the goblin came with a felt pad for hardwood floors. It was augmented by a Regina electric broom in the early 60's (which I, unfortunately, no longer have) and was in use till grandma died in 1969.

And the final one that I can contribute. My moms Lewyt 97 which she bought in 1957 and used (and I grew up playing with) up till the time I replaced it with an Electrolux for her in the early 1980's.

So those are the 3 family machines I have and, incidentally, the ones that started my collecting.

Great idea, nice to see those family machines.
I would contribute, but the machines I have are only
same models but not the machines. Plus getting pics
on line just never works for me. Will try at some
point.
My dad's mom Grandma brown, had a 105 Hoover until the
early 50's when she got a 511/512 Kirby with all the
attachments. Grandma Sisler (moms mother) had a used Eureks
11, then had a Sears upright (don't remember the model #)
It was late 40s,early 50s Gray Upright, cloth bag and tools
that attached in the front like a Royal. Pull off a square
cover, insert hose just under the headlight. Then a new
Blue Hoover 62, with paper bags and a short hose set.
My mom had a used Hoover 425/475 until I was 5 then Dad
bought a new Air Way 66,for Christmas 1953 I was 5 and it was
the best Christmas I had for years to come !! LOL !

Family Vacs

First, and the only family vac I have a picture of, is my Grandmother's (Mom's Mother) model 82 Constellation. Most of you have already heard the story of how my Grandfather bought it for her in 1955 for their Anniversary, their last before he passed away in Feb. 1956, just 4 1/2 months before I was born. She took excellent care of it, and after she moved in with us in 1965, she only used it to clean her own room, as Mom cleaned the rest of the house. It became mine after Grandma passed away and Mom moved from the house into an apartment.
I also have a Westinghouse cannister that belonged to an Aunt of mine that I got when she and my Uncle went into assisted living.
Then there's the model 966 Electro-Hygiene that I bought for my Mother when I was selling them in 1974, and also the 858 Constellation and Filter-Queen 350 that she bought at moving sales at the apartment complex she managed (and later lived in.
And because they belonged to family members, they are a special part of my collection.

family vac

This was the diamond jubilee my parents had as I was growing up. I recently rescued it from its demise from becoming a full time garage vac which my mother had excommunicated it from the house. For reasons that are beyond me. She has asked me several times for various vacuums that I find but I just cant picture one of my prize vacuums being slammed into walls and sucking up gosh knows what outside on her lanai. She now has an Oreck and we all know what contraversy that stirs up. She loves it I love mind end of story lol.

Better picture

Final picture. Oh notice the red on the dusting brush. It was used to suck up tile and brick dust that her Ex was using while doing some work at a job site. That is when enough was enough. This is not some dirt devil dust gutter tramp.

Mum's Vac ...

A brown 612, bought around 1953. I used to pretend to clean the house with it until I was old enough to actually be allowed to use it switched on. I was also given a toy replica at Christmas when I was 5 or 6, so my fascination came out early in life.

I got my 612 last year. I'm lucky that it has the original bag, however it doesn't seem to inflate to the full shape that I remember from childhood. Unfortunately it also has a small hole near the base, so it can't be practially used anymore. It's still fun to listen to though.

And my cleaner ...

I still used my U5096 for our regular housework. It is by far the best cleaner I've ever had, to the extent that whenever something goes wrong with it, I try to find the parts to fix it up again. The newer WindTunnel that I bought when I didn't think I'd be able to fix the Turbomaster drives me crazy having to bend down to change from carpet to floor - it's been relegated to the shed and will only be used in emergencies. They just don't make them like they used to!

ok that's fun

The one my mother had. I use to sit on top of it and drove around the room when she was cleaning. It is a philips made in holland were i used to live.

Maternal Grans

was an Electrolux Z55, in faux croc skin effect!!! or so us kids where told...lovely & quiet, woven hose..it had a metal brush but my gran upgraded the floor brush with the pink / cream Z65 when it came out!!! The cord was a heavy flexible rubber with a slide in two prong bakelite plug...that was my job to plug & un-plug the cord..it was always wrapped around a nail hung on the wall of the pantry under the stairs...

Paternal Nans..

This was a Goblin Cleansweep, very light little thing, aluminium wand & selection of tools , although my nan used the brush tool even on the carpets, seemed to groom better!!! then the Hoover Dirtsearcher appeared....and stayed!!!this was the one I remember most...Nans three daughters, my aunts, also bought it as it was "On Special" at manweb for £27g complete with tools...

I have my Grandmother's 3rd vacuum cleaner, it is a kirby Classic that was given to her by my Grandfathers mother because she bought two of them within a few weeks. Grandma still has the Electrolux XXX she bought used from a doctors wife along with her speed queen wringer and chrome dinette set when they got their 1st house in 1961. She still has the Hoover Convertible 1020 she bought when she got a larger house in 1969. I will eventually have these one day as well.
The first vacuum I remember of my mother's was a mid 1980's Kenmore upright, I have never seen another like it and would love to find it someday.

I have 3 that were in my family too.......

I have the 1963 Hoover Convertible Special my mom got as a newlywed...I also have the 2001 Slimline she got later (both of these I rescued form our summer home). Then I also have my Grandma Haughers 1962 Electrolux L (the early one with the black flipper switch) and the originalk attatchments.....PAT COFFEY

granny vacs...

i have both of my grandmothers Kirbys. The gran on moms side had a DS-80, that i sent in for a factory rebuild, and the gran on my dads side had a Heritage I. I have them both.

I grew up with mom having a Kenmore Satellite canister circa 1955 and she used it for decades when it was replaced by an 80's Kenmore twin fan. The Satellite sat in her basement all these years, I'd see it on every visit home, until when I finally moved back here 30+ years later it was gone grrrrr. She gave it to someone...
That and my Kmart/Brother portable electric typewriter I got in highschool, gone!!! Oooh I wasn't happy about that. She doesn't remember getting rid of it. T'was there 3 years ago when I last came for a visit too.
How could my mom do that to me. .She knows I collect stuff and was never to throw anything of mine out, I think she's going dotty LOL

Freedom 750w Green and Cream?

You mean this one?

We are not totally sure its original as it should according to the brochure have a chrome grille and green cord wind but the previous owners had it from near new and didnt have it repaired.

Maybe its a special for a leccy shop???

The only genuine Family vacuum I have is this festively conglomerated 1967 Electrolux 89. It began life as a complete all green 89 with electric hose and PN. The telescopic wand and main body is all that remains original.

I received it only this Christmas past as it was thought by Mom to be decades long gone. Brother Jim piped up at brunch to say he had it stored away in his basement. When Dad bought Mom her new vacuum (after I left home) he absconded it to the Garage Workshop. Over the years it clearly encountered mis-adventures and he, frugal man, replaced parts as they failed with whatever he could scrounge. I'm particularly impressed that he leak-proofed the beige hose in matching red plastic bags. The 'Banana Puce' PN200 from 1976-8 is another choice touch. Other than its bangs & bumps and 'Johnny Cash Cadillac One Piece At A Time' appearance it is clean and rust free inside and runs smooth, strong and quiet to this day.

I have accumulated enough green parts, with the help of Pete and Doug Smith to re-build it all in green but as I have a third 89 that needs help most of those parts will be used in its resurrection.

In Loving Memory of this 89's long Family Service I will eventually be 'restoring' it in Red and Green with a red cord and a latexed red saran weave hose from a red 86/88.

Although the whereabouts of other relative's vacuums are unknown I have managed to find examples of Gramma Scheafe's (and Mom's) Filter Queen, Gramma Kerr's Hoover 281, Aunt Carol's Constellation, Aunt Jessie's Lewyt Big Wheel, Aunt Bernadette's Compact and Great Aunt Sophie's green GE Swiveltop.

Vacuum Brand loyalty may not run strong in my Family but everyone of them drove General Motors almost exclusively - Cadillac, Pontiac, Chevy, Buicks or Oldsmobiles through the 1940s to 80s. Oh, those German/Scots roots...

I don't have my mother's original Kirby, because it was killed in a house fire. But I do still have the Omega that Kirby replaced it with under their Lifetime agreement to rebuild. It was not rebuildable, so it was replaced for $12.50.

Green & cream 750 Freedom

Hello,

It looks as if your cleaner has been made up from the basic freedom 750 which was cream & orange whereas the olive green model had a matching green foot switch by one of the rear wheels which were fitted with matching soft pvc tyres. A caster was fitted underneath the the bag end. An opack thick pvc holdall with a wide handle/loop (with a large circular transfer hoover emblem in red on one side) for holding the tools.......I missed picking up a mint machine in its carton days before it was sold about five years ago !!!!!!!

Regards, Walter.
