Fairly rare Electrolux Model S on eBay

This isn't in the greatest condition but it's a pretty rare model, one that you hardly ever see anymore as it was made for less than a year in early 1957 (soon replaced with the Model R, itself fairly rare now).

For lack of a better term....

I think the "S" is a really cute machine - although completely basic, no frills about it. I too have one and can't wait to restore it. What I find odd about the "S" is the fact that the horizontal band with the stamped Electrolux logo does not continue toward the rear of the machine as it does in all the other machines that share this body style. It quits at the point where the machine changes shape to house the motor.

Yes, the S was a no-frills "Plain Jane" model. I think they quickly realized they went too far with the "no frills," not even providing cord storage, so the upgraded Model R was rolled out with a halo, power nozzle port, larger F-style rear wheels, and rubber bumpers on the front cover latches.

(The R was the economy model for the later F and early G until the Model L came out in 1963. Early Rs had F color scheme, the later ones had the addition of some turquoise accents.)

I love the S too - dainty little machine, sweet color scheme, it's the lightest-weight of any of the Electroluxes. You can remove the cover, pull out the bag, turn the machine on, place it on a hard-surface floor, and it will taxi across the room like a jet! You can also stick it on a wall while it's running and it will STAY there!!

I have always wanted to put a Super-J motor in an S to see how fast it will jet across the room!!

Yes Bill, there are several errors in that poster and in various other versions of it that Electrolux put out over the years:

• Model XX (1941*) -- not shown

• Model LXI (1955) -- not shown

• Model S - (late 1956-early 1957)

• Model R - (1957-59) grey/white

• Model R - (1960-63) grey/white w/ turquoise accents -- not shown

• Model L - (1963-67) white w/ turquoise trim -- not shown

• Model L - (1967-68) bronze w/ off-white & gold trim -- not shown

• Model L - (1969-74) dark turquoise w/ white trim. [The dark turquoise version shown and dated 1966 did not come out until 1969 when the 1205 came out.]

• Model L - (1974-79) - gold with white & dark turquoise trim (concurrent with Golden Jubilee model) -- not shown

• Model G Bronze/Tan version (1967-68) -- not shown

I see they left out the Hospital G models on that chart as well. The Canadian chart is equally erroneous.

Right, yes. I overlooked it as well!

There were three Hospital Gs, actually --- (1) early version in white w/ turquoise trim with the "front-loading" PN port, (2) like the later turquoise G with the side-PN port, and (3) in white with tan and white trim.

Pity the Hospital G models are such rare machines. I'd love to have examples of all 3, but they almost never seem to pop up on Ebay. Was there any notation/engraving/etc. on the Hospital G to indicate that it was a Hospital model, rather than a standard G?

There is a gold colored "commemorative" plate, I guess given to Lux dealers or sales branches - that show up on EBay every now and then. Amazingly, it shows the model XX on it. Gonna nab one of those someday.

pss don't tell anyone but I think I'm going to do that with an extra convertible 65, i'm tired of not finding a golden 65 so I think i'll make one, but don't tell anyone. I want them to think I have something special. lol

As long as we're completing the chart....

...we should not forget the short-lived 'T', an earlier attempt at a 'no frills' cleaner. The 'T' is probably as bare-boned as you can get (talking cleaners now!) It did come with the same motor, hose, flip-floor and flip-dusting/upholstery tools as the mighty AE (AND black Belden cord/plug!) However, although it has the same 'nub' as the subsequent 'S', there is not even a front wheel within! It has been characterized as "a stove-pipe with motor and bag" and this is not far off. Just add two rear wheels! And keeping with Electrolux's tradition of NOT complicating things with 17 variations of bags, it even utilized the model 30/XXX bag!
