Hey ya'll! I'm new to the whole posting thing, but i have been hangin around here reading others for some time now! The ohther day while i went in to one of our local "junk" shops to see what they had, well low and behold they had several old vacs in the store... one was a old Royal upright with a green bag, one was a kirby G-5, and one was a fairfax.. They had a price tag on the G-5 "$10.00 non-working kirby" well my bottom cord hook had gotton broken off some time back and i thought what tha heck, i just buy it for parts, then my eye caught the royal, i didnt have one so i got it just cause. on my way up to check out i saw a silver robot looking thing.... A fairfax? never had i saw one of theese before, so i picked it up too... no hose or any attachments, and no price tag!!!! so i took all my finds up to the front and told the lady i would give her 15 for all of them and she said OK!! so i loaded 'em up and headed home. Of course by the time i got home it was killing me to know which ones would work, well guess what!! they all do!! Even the kirby with the "non-working" sign! Worked better than the one i had already! smooth transmission, great suction... just really dirty, i havent played with the royal too much yet.. but the fairfax runs like a charm, it has two speeds, good suction giving it the ol' hand test... i cant seem to find a S/N or Model # on it anywere... But its all silver, i would like to find the other parts for it if anyone has any let me know! I did a search and saw there were a couple on ebay but non that were just all silver, i did see www.137.com/fairfax and that one is the closest i have seen so far, i would love to have all of those attachment with mine! i will try to post pics of them on here. they had some other old vacs in there, a couple of old kenmore canisters, some plastics, and one old convertable lookng one, im going to go back and check it out! but any who thanks for reading this and hope everyone has a safe and fun holiday season! ~lata~

Hey Cody! I was just curious if your Fairfax has the outlet for the power nozzle on it, and if so, would you be willing to sell it, even without a hose or tools. Just let me know. Later, Trg

My pair o' Fairfaxs, one with PN socket, the other without. Save for the red theme and Fax-o-matic sticker graphics it uses the exact same PN as the Hoover Model S8093 Powermatic PN.

Fairfaxes....

Hi,

I used to have one that had the Eureka Roto-Matic Powerhead labled Fax-O-Matic As well. My machine cleaned very well, and was a workhorse second vac up at my folks house for many moons.

It's still up ther but the powerhead died, and I've just never had the opportunity to repair it. I suppose now that I'm seeing this, i should take it an ddo something with it....

LOL

I don't know what I did with mine? Did I give it to you Doug I just can remember in the schmozzle of the move 2 years ago.

What year did Fairfax come out with the power nozzel? I have the Eureka style fax o matic from the late eighties or early ninties as well as the late 90's with the black wessel werk.

I will hedge a guess that it was the early 1980's. That would have been about the time that both Eureka and Hoover began to private lable their powerheads. But for Eureka I would guess the late 1970's.

Reason? Rexair/Rainbow started offering their powerhead in 1976 I believe.

And they private labled for Compact/Revelation, Jc Penney's and Wards. Not all in that order of course.

So I guess my final thought is 1981-82??

fairfax

the one i have does not have a plug for the powerhead... and does look alot like the ones in the pics... its really a cool looking machine, im going to strat geting it cleaned up and get the hose, wands, and dolly.. i would like to find a chrome dolly for it if anyone has one, or any parts they wanna part with, i will pay a resonable price and shipping!

Sounds good, Chad.

This Canadian (Apollo Vacuum Corp, 813 Brock Rd, Unit 3&4, Pickering, Ontario) Manual has a Date of Purchase for May 11, 1985. The debris bucket is now white plastic. I'm not sure if the white caster base is painted metal or plastic also.

Spelling correction, my typo - it's not Fax-O, it's Fax-a-matic.

Now then, for we Lovers of Trivia: I have two manuals for the all chrome/non PN Fairfax's that have two different addresses for Fairfax Industries International, Inc.

Purchase dated June 22 1976, Fairfax Industries was located at
155 Weldon Parkway, Suite 110, Maryland Heights, Missouri 63043

Purchase dated February 12 1975, Fairfax offices are listed at
5511 14th St,N.W., Washington, DC 20011

Both have a Canadian address as simply
Box 114, Welland, Ontario.

Would that be Switson, Doug?

I guess then that my PN equipped all chrome Fairfax with the clip on cord dates before 1985 and after 1976.

Does a Fairfax use a similar dirt catching system as the Filter Queen? Also, are they still made? I've never seen one personally but the pictures make them look quite large.

Does a Fairfax use a similar dirt catching system as the Fil

Roger,

To simply answer your question...not really.

The long answer is: Fairfaxes used a paper disc in many cases as the main filtration medium. This was VERY similar to the Silver-King/ Thompson Sanitation systems, and many people used the machines like this. Silver King to my knowledge never "improved" their filtration beyond this step, but Fairfax did.

The discs, sat under a round crosshatched "grille" that also included the rubber bumper that you see in the pic above, on the top of the tank. ( Think a round pizza pan, with a crosshatched grille like you would see on a milk crate, made of plastic on most machines, that the round paper filter sat under. The upper motor unit clamped down on all this holding the filte rin place by pressure)

However, the discs, even tho made of paper "like" the Filter Queen, did not allow the dirt to easily "fall away" from the paper, clogging them quickly as was the case with the Silver King. You literally had to empty the machine too often, and customers MUST have compalined.

Therefore, in most "newer" Fairfaxes, there was a metal snout that poked into the dirt tank, like a Filter Queen, but they designed in a LARGE filterbag to fit inside to trap the main dirt.

Hence, the secondary "paper disc", was used as a secondary "pre-motor" filter when this option was chosen.

The large mushroom looking contraption sticking out of the exhaust area contained another "filter" giving HEPA filtration IIRC. Mine does not have this option, so I'm making a safe assumption here.

Hope this explanation helps...

Fairfax actually had 3 different powernozzles with the early machines. The first was an all metal (chrome) powerhead (I cant remember the makers name but they were also used on Airway, Royal and Regina). The second was the Hoover PN and the third the Eureka PN.

The dates I have for the vacuums in my collection are 1983 for the one with the Hoover PN and 1986 for the one with the Eureka PN so I would imagine the first PN would have been out around 1979 - 1981.

Hey Pete - nope - didnt go to me - I already had the same one.

Hey Dave - not 100% sure but Switson industries would be a very good guess as they made the Canadian machines for alot of other companies (Even Kirby at one time). "free trade" destroyed alot of companys like that.

Doug

What would the power head look like that went to Airway Royal and Regina? All the ones I have ever seen on those were all different. I don't remember one that looked the same.

Chad, thanks

Now I understand how a Fairfax works! That was a thorough but not thoroughly long explanation. I wonder if the suction was improved with the metal snout and filter bag?

Fairfax....

I had an experience where I won the bid on a beautiful fairfax, just like the one pictured above...including all the attachments, and accessories. I never did recieve the vac. The seller posted that he would not be selling any more on ebay due to family matters. Hmmmmm. Very interesting.

Hi Phillip:

The power head I was referring to was like this one from the yellow Airway. They made the same one in green for Airway as well, blue for Royal and Chrome for Regina and Fairfax.
