While I have no experience with these machines, I feel from a product development standpoint that not only is this underwhelming in terms of a product launch (compared to the new Bissell machines, Hoover's new Air PN canister & QuietForce canister, etc...) it also is just kind of slap in the face to the history of this once proud manufacturer.[/COLOR]

I think this is very clever, If you go to a vac shop they often tailor the vacuum to suit your needs. Its cleverness like this that will make more sales. Its kind of like a car remember when your only options were colour and a radio? Now with some company's you can build the car from scratch basically. This is great news.

A customizable vacuum sounds good, but Eureka as failed to impress me in recent years...

The concept has already been done - Miele announced this way of custom building vacuums on their UK website some time ago. Im sure other approaches by other brands have also done it.

The trouble is, most UK buyers are savvy - and most already dislike the high cost of Miele vacuums with added optional costs tagged on. If Miele UK hadn't supplied so many accessories to begin with, they wouldn't have such a hard battle to convince buyers to the site that custom building is cost effective - when in reality it really isn't.

Another problem is that in the UK there are very few private dealers who now sell vacuums as well as repair them/offer extra consumables and tools. That older, much preferred service where it was possible to get decent customer service from a reliant service and personnel has sadly died out. Some shops still exist but they're very rare to find.

[COLOR=#003366; font-family: tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif]I had the Yellow Eureka Straight Suction $49 canister and it was horrible. It lasted about a year and a half. The barefloor tool plastic was weak and broke so it would no longer stand on its own. The suction left much to be desired - and overall build quality was deplorable. Have not used any of the upright machines in years.[/COLOR]

cheap vacuums

In all honesty you can't expect to get much for a $ 49.00 machine. I see this so often in my shop, customers come in and go " oo I dont like that brand I bought one of there cheapies and it only lasted 2 years I was very dissapointed" I never understand this, you buy a vacuum for the price of half a tank of gas and then complain when it only last a year or too.
We get the exact oposite when customers come in who have a $ 1000.00 vacuum and it breaks after 2 years and they go oh well we got good service out of it.


Considering that a few decades ago a cheap vacuum would cost you two months pay if not more and now you can buy one with pocket change its not that bad. I always say if its cheap and last for a year then it has paid for itself a few times over.

The problem is that the price isn't always a good reflection of what you get, either. I suppose as collectors though, we get to know good prices as well as able to offer a service to one another, should we wish to buy directly rather than from a brand with over marked up prices.
