Eureka Powerteam Model 1289

My very 1st Eureka Model 1289! It's going to need a few minor cosmetic touch ups and I'm still cleaning off the grease and scuff marks . The attachments I hope to find , but I can pull them from my other models for another pic display later. Otherwise it sounds and runs very good !

They are great!

Mine has a few minor scratches, and the identical replacement hose as Kiethers does. $10 2 years ago at Salvation army. I touched them up with burgundy metallic Pontiac paint. Original cleaning tools too, and in good shape. The crevice tool was cracked. I found a blue one and painted it.
I also have a model 1279 Brandywine. I bought it for my mom in 1979. Both came with the same Vibragroomer I power nozzle.
There are photos somewhere on the site archive as "I'm new here".
Petek has a mint condition example, and the coordinating upright.

The motor

is a 2 stage (fan) ball bearing beast. So much power that it sucks the power nozzle down to the carpet on high speed set for rugs.
Mine says model 1290, and draws 11 amps, the 1279 draws 9.5. The power nozzle draws 1.8 amps.
Check the rating sticker on yours Kiether. I wonder what the difference is if any.

with my reading glasses. 11.5 amps for the 1290. It has a slight round bump out on the bottom the diameter of the motor.

Hi Keith,

That’s a beautiful Eureka you got there. Believe it or not, the canister design (minus the power nozzle) is from around 1968. Eureka Williams called this the Empress II “FastVac.”. They touted new features as being like a racing car: radio buttons for the suction control, mag wheels for better maneuvering and racing stripes along the sides for styling. The Tool Pak on top had 5 nubs for 5 attachments including a Vibra-Beat carpet nozzle and a separate regular carpet nozzle.

Just an interesting Eureka Trivia footnote: the Art Director directing the photo shoot for this new product has neglected one minor detail that only a fanatic like me might notice. Model 1880 is the deluxe “top of the line” model in a group of probably 3 or 4 versions of the Empress II. Therefore, the tools supplied should be the deluxe set of attachments including the square (as opposed to round) dusting brush. But several of the photos are showing the basic curved upholstery nozzle, when they should be showing the wider deluxe upholstery nozzle. Somebody made a mistake at the photo shoot....or the deluxe nozzle went missing and they were running out of studio time!!!

Sorry for being just a touch obsessed!

Hey Keith...okay...the model 1010 is Eureka Williams’ very first “canned ham” tear drop shape canister which made its debut the year I was born: 1959. The 1010 never went by the name Empress. It was originally marketed as the “ MobileAire “ for Eureka’s golden anniversary (50 years, 1909-1959). It came in a dark green colour with dark green tools. A year or two later, the company changed the colour to Eureka’s famous 1960’s Lagoon Blue (aqua turquoise) with blue tools and hose. I don’t think they continued using the name MobileAire....it was just called the Vibra-Beat because of the vibrating carpet nozzle that was featured with the 1010.

Interesting note: the 1010 was the only Eureka canister ever sold in the United Kingdom and France in the 1960’s. It was sold by the Parnall appliance company and it was literally called the “Parnall TenTen!”

Mike, on some Eureka canisters of various series the bump outs were circular vents that resembled fan blades; which I think may have been what were advertised as "fan-jet" motors. Eureka seems to have discontinued the fan-jet at some point in the 1970s after it increased the amperage of its motors.

I think they increased airflow. I asked a former Eureka executive and he thought it was just a marketing term; albeit his mechanical aptitude may be more limited like mine. Eureka also advertised some cleaners as having dual exhaust with two standard jets on the bottom or at the rear which leads me to the airflow conclusion. Apparently the later motors with more amps negated the need for dual exhausts; as Eureka discontinued the design around the same time they were introduced.

I don't know that I've seen a Eureka with these vents. Moms Mobile Aire Vibrabeat had the exhaust on the bottom, one hole, it was also the blower port.
When the Sweet 16's debuted, it was moved to the back, and the lid had to be opened for the hose to attach to blow. My 1290 has two rear ports, but only one or the other are open. A slider valve closes the primary exhaust for the blower feature.

Eureka typically put the dual exhausts and fan jets on models with extra features. The first two photos show different fan-jet designs. The others show other varieties of the company's canister exhausts. I'm unsure if Eureka had specific IDs for those that allowed a hose connection for blowing, but I refer to them as ports. Anyway, exhaust is one of Eureka's many canister features that distinguished certain models or model-types from one another.

I'm unsure, but I think the term referred to the vents. Even so, advertising usually referred to "fan jet motor" and not "fan jet exhaust". I base my opinion on what the Eureka executive stated, and that the canister motors themselves in that era appeared to be the same in Eureka canisters, but not all ads mentioned a fan jet motor. Also a 'jet' by definition is a rapid stream of liquid or gas forced out of a small opening instead of a motor design.
