I found this Eureka M at a local shop. It runs smoothly and looks to be all original. I collect streamline/deco items. However, I don't know much about vacuums and this is my first one.

From what I found in the forum, this model came out about 1935. Does anyone know how long it was produced? Where did it fit in the Eureka lineup (low end/high end)? Is there anyone you would recommend if I wanted to have it restored someday?

Thanks for any information you can provide!

I believe

These were made up until WW2, they also made a painted version that was a beautiful burgundy color with white rubber trim.

Beautiful machine!

It doesn't really look like there's a whole lot you need to do to it cosmetically. Besides, at almost 80 years old, it's earned its patina.

How does it run?

Thanks for the replies!

It runs well on both speeds--and quieter than I had expected it to be.

However, I'm missing the bulb. Are bulbs that fit still available? Any suggestions for where to get a replacement?

Hi KenKart,

I searched but couldn't find a picture for the red version online. Do you have one? I'd be interested in seeing it!

The Red model D (on left, donated to the Museum by Norm Brown) was the direct replacement for the Model M. I have a red painted model M in the Vacuum Cleaner Museum's collection - it's packed away in the store room. However, during the Vacuum Collectors Group Convention, second weekend in June, one of the events is to go through the store room. I'll grab a pic of the red painted Model M then.

The Model M was called "the challenger" both in advertising and in the Instruction Manual. It challenged the Hoover (it's biggest rival) to the fact that the Hoover could NOT outclean it. In fact, the advertisements "challenged any cleaner, at any price" to clean better. It was an extraordinarily good vacuum for the day. IF I had to accept Eureka's "challenge", I would use a twin motor Air-Way Sanitary System.

I'd definitely like to see the red model M if you're able to get a photo. Thanks for the great info!

Congradulations on your Model M! I have one too and it's one of my favorites of my collection. The light bulb is easy! It is the common bayonet style used by many vacuums including older Royal uprights such as the 880, and the Kirby 500 series. You should be able to get one at a vacuum cleaner store.
