This old beast has been languishing in the mud room awaiting it's resurrection! Today was the day! The motor has been sent off to be rebuilt as the commutator was toast!

Was the Emperor made by Panasonic in Japan? That's fitting since the Japanese head of state is an emperor....
Can't figure out where the bag is in this Eureka....does it fit into the base? Or is it in the small compartment on the handle?

The bag does go into the compartment on the handle. I have a working Emperor, which I understand is pretty rare, as Robert indicated, they had motor issues. Yes, they were I believe a Panasonic built vacuum, badged Eureka. I'm surprised the motors didn't last long really, considering the quality back then. It was Eureka's flagship of it's time with the upright, and the Empress canister as it's mate.

Is its Panasonic counterpart. I only saw one of those once. It was pale blue and I remember the push buttons mounted on the hard bag shell. Please get that baby running!

Thank you Rick. Fascinating piece of Eureka history. I think I saw a print ad on eBay showing the attachment hose connected at the top front of the hood.
Any relation to a similar Kenmore upright of that era?
I wonder if this was Panasonic's first ever foray into the North American floor care market...if yes, this Emperor marks the start of a very long and successful chapter in Panasonic's vacuum cleaner history.

Yep, those are fill bellows that connect to a clear plastic tube in the handle mounted bag chamber. It take type P bags that seem to be long discontinued. I'm lucky to have a few packs of them sitting around. The motor shop said it would cost around 150 or 180 to get restored. A bar on the commutator was completely wasted.

I have one of those with the Panasonic badge. The motor definitely needs work...it squeals. I think at $300.00 for a rebuild, I will pass.

Hold on a minute....wasn't that Kenmore made by Whirlpool for Sears? I would imagine that the Kenmore would have been a direct rival to the Eureka Emperor back in the 60's.
Guy - If it's just making a squealing noise, it is most likely due to a bad motor bearing or a bad brushroll bearing. Maybe try disconnecting the belt from the brushroll to be sure the brushroll isn't the issue? If one of the motor bearings is faulty, however, it wouldn't be that difficult to buy a bearing & replace it yourself, depending on your mechanical skills.

Now that I see where the bag is situated in the Kenmore, I see that it really is a different design than the Eureka Emperor with the bag in the handle compartment. My conclusion is the Kenmore was not made by Panasonic. The Kenmore is actually quite similar in configuration to the mysterious and rare Eureka Easy-Glide that seems to have survived only in pictures....

It is a lot of money, it will be the most I have ever put into a vintage machine. But, to a serious collector like me its worth it to have one of the few remaining Emperors in like new operational condition. With a freshly rebuilt motor I'm sure it will now last for a lifetime. My super old Premier "37" needs a rebuild to. The motor runs but it bogs down, and continues to bog down steadily when the belt is hooked up. It needs rewound I suppose.
