Eureka 1934b Discontinued

This was sad to find. I briefly owned a 1934a, and it was a great machine for how inexpensively you could buy one new. Where else could you find an upright with a beater bar for ~$100?

I remember when I got mine for $79 from the Eureka site itself onsale. I see the online world has noticed it being discontinued. There all $200 and up. Such a shame!

Its commercial counterpart, the SC679J, is still produced and can be had for ~$115, so I guess not all is lost. Still, this is sad news.

Hey bagintheback, what have you been doing on Youtube? Eureka has no bagged machines anymore (they have one, but nobody cares). Guess it's off to the used market...

Wow, you're right! There's only one bagged upright left. But for $199? The self-propelled Hoover Windtunnel has got to be the better choice at that price point.

I haven't thought about YouTube for awhile, but thanks for reminding me! The problem is that it's become pretty hard to find vintage vacuums at thrift stores recently. I have a theory that thrift stores are about 15-20 years behind in products. So when I first started looking about 10 years ago, early '90s Elites were everywhere and it's wasn't unusual to find a Convertible or F&G Eureka. Now we're down to the early Bissell Powerforces and the occasional DC07, but all of them were built with such weak plastic none of them are salvageable. Plus, at least here in Arizona, Goodwill has raised their prices to the point I can only afford things on half off days. I might have a few interesting things sitting around though; maybe I'll get on video sometime.

Sad Story indeed

It appears that some companies prefer innovative, modern-style machines and are starting old style machines that go back a long way. Hoover is a sad example of this. On Hoover's commercial line, the beloved guardsman that started out as the Convertible and the decade (a newer, but still old line machines) is on its way out. There's only 1 model of the gaurdsman left from hoover commercial- the bagless convertible style c1433-010. Sanitaire (professional), Royal, and Kirby are the only companies left in the country that make a household, traditional style upright where the fan faces forward (kirby and royal) or the bottom, not to the side like oreck).Eureka, in my view, once tried to be innovative but still have a traditional upright with the boss self propelled. That was eventually discontinued. Kirby's innovation with traditional uprights has succeeded through the years, but why eureka's traditional yet (semi)innovative boss self propelled was discontinued may be a mystery.

I feel Eureka may have to go out of business with Dirt Devil. Bissell may have to move their headquarters to South Korea. Hoover, they may have to resort to Japanese manufacturing.

With Midea taking over Eureka, the only source we now have for classic Eureka uprights is Sanitaire - and maybe the knock-offs being produced by Bissell and Koblenz. Though the headlights are gone, you can still get a decent Eureka Vanguard upright with Vibra-Groomer brushroll from Sanitaire. It looks like Electrolux is keeping their Sanitaire line-up and Mexican assembly line.

And it looks like the Commercial Division of Bissell has contracted Sanitaire to make some uprights branded “Bissell Big Green”. Even the Sanitaire ST top fill bags are being used. See link:

Perfect?

Years ago when I worked for Oreck part-time, we had that same upright as Bissell only branded with the Oreck name. For some reason I thought those machines were from Perfect..but I will admit, I do have some cobwebs in my archives! We carried four models, all with metal hoods, and one was a bagless with a dirt cup. You also had choices of dump bags or the ST setup and the bags of course were branded Oreck. When Oreck stopped selling the heavier commercial line, they started popping up green badged Bissell. I was always confused about what was happening. Can anyone shed any light on that transition?

Wow. Rick, you are correct. Perfect is also selling these Sanitaire copies.

Indeed, this is a mystery: there is either one factory making the same Sanitaires for all those brands (Sanitaire, Perfect, Bissell, Koblenz), or there are now 4 factories owned by 4 separate companies which have the rights to create and sell the same line of commercial uprights.

And where are these assembly lines? Did Electrolux close the Sanitaire factory in Mexico? Or is it still up and running? And if yes, is Sanitaire making all these copies for the commercial market?

So many questions....so few answers... :-(

Those are definitely Perfect products. You can always tell by the looped handle. The hoods are slightly more curved, and the cooling vents make a V shape rather than the parallel lines on Sanitaires. They're made in China and use different motors than Sanitaire, but the one I owned came with a Vibra-Groomer I and used RD belts.

They're very loud though. There's the low rumble of the brushroll, but it's taken over by this high-pitched whine that doesn't seem to change if the motor changes speed.

I hope Hoover and Sanitaire stick with their traditional uprights. The knock-offs do the job, but you can't beat the originals.

Some suppliers still have stock of the great Sanitaire “Blue Line” vacs. Because these come with headlights, they are really the closest thing to getting a “Vibra-Groomin” Eureka Vanguard from the good old 1970’s.

Since Eureka was sold, the new company may be discontinuing all of the previous line up, hard to say. Kind of a shame, a company once known for innovation and excellent bagged power team canisters no longer makes any of those. As far as I know, Electrolux is keeping their ultra one series and the sanitaire brand. The Sanitaire 535 is an excellent backpack vacuum, very quiet and powerful, one of my favorite backpacks in my collection, I have 7 of those.

That's a shame, but not really unexpected, given that Eureka was sold.

I love my 1934A, does a great job and not all that loud, at least has a nice sound to it. It's also lightweight and has good filtration, good bag capacity and no smell using the Arm & Hammer bags. If I could say anything negative, it's that the cord is rather short and no quick release. But otherwise it's great.
