Eureka 1425A/Dial a Nap History?

The Dial-A-Nap height control goes way back into the late '50s or early '60s. It was used on both Eureka and Sanitaire uprights. On Eurekas, beginning in the late '70s or early '80s, Dial-A-Nap was used on the less expensive uprights while the higher end models got the sliding 'Rugulator' height control.

From about 1955 to about 1970, Eureka uprights had a hose port on the front of the motor hood. In order for the user to adjust the height of the nozzle, you had to turn over the cleaner and adjust the axle of the rear wheels.

The first top side height adjuster Eureka offered was the Rugulator sliding knob adjuster which made it’s debut on the 1970 version of the Eureka Vanguard. The Dial-a-Nap rotary adjuster was introduced about a year or two later.

These new top side height adjusters forced Eureka’s designers to go back to an earlier method of attaching a hose for above-the-floor cleaning: a pan converter that would attach to the underside of the front of the cleaner to capture the suction for hose-mode cleaning.

I have one of the top-hose ones

I have one of those pre-1970 Eurekas with the top plate--through some miracle, I was able to find the replacement part. It's a wonderful machine! Out of curiosity, when the Rugulator and Dial-a-Nap were out, did Eureka ever make a base model without a height adjustment?

I actually remember one base line model that did not have an adjuster on top, but I am not sure. You would have to get your hands on a the Eureka upright line up from 1970 that would show the very first Rugulator model.

It looks like Eureka debuted the Rugulator in 1969…see advertisement below. It does not even indicate the Vibra Groomer brush roll yet….that must have debuted a year later. Interesting that the ad does not say that you need to tip the cleaner head up off the rug to move the slider knob. If you don’t tip it back off the rug, it’s almost impossible to move!!!!

I can imagine that in the first years there was some overlap: Eureka’s upright line-up must have included both Rugulator deluxe uprights and less expensive cleaners still showing the top-side hose port in front.

If you can find the spec sheets showing the other models from the same year as the 1425, you will see a Model 1402 which has no height adjuster. If you Google Eureka Upright Model 1402 or 1401, the dealer spec sheet comes up on PicClic.
