Here's a neat television ad for the Eureka F&G Upright model 1424 from 1980. It even shows the cleaning tools being used with it! The commercial starts at 6:47. Enjoy!

Now that's a good point, that one in the other thread isn't a J424, it's a 1424, I never even thought of that... 
Yup, you're right.
It was a darn funny looking 1, and there's a bit more space between 1 and 4 than between the other digits, but I think 1424 E is right. I'm cleaning the thing up now, I'll post pictures when it's back together. The insides seem to be in good shape, motor looks like the 'blender' motor (or at least it looks more like the motor in my Osterizer than the one in my Hoover)

Belt tension...
While cleaning the brushroll on this machine, I noticed that the hexagonal 'ends' of the roll have a side marked 'new' and a side marked 'worn.' This looks like it's intended to be used to adjust belt tension slightly - I'm certain I'm not the first to notice this, but perhaps it would be of use for tension issues.

Not for belt tension.When bristles become worn and shorter rotating till 'worn' is visible extends bristles further for longer brush life with better cleaning.Many Royals and Kirbys have or have had similar adjustments.

Lincoln - the "new" and "worn" settings on a Eureka brushroll refer to the bristles. If the bristles are new, you install the roll so that this word is facing down (toward the carpet). If it's an older brushroll with worn bristles, you can delay buying a new one for a while by reinstalling it so that the word "worn" is visible (or at least facing down toward the carpet). This basically adjusts the level of the brushroll so that worn bristles are sticking out more so that they can still sweep the rug fibres properly.

There's one clarification though.....the department store division was sold to May Company but even as that was in the works, Federated (owner of Macy's) was working a deal to purchase May so that in one fell swoop they could make Macy's a national brand.
I lived through the whole sordid affair and left the company one year after joining the soviet union of Macy's. (yes, I'm still a little bitter)

Notice the Donaldson's ad too,,another long ago and long standing Minn. dept store.
If you ever watched the "Mary Tyler Moore Show", in the opening credits, before she does the famous hat toss,,there is a brief shot of her in the front of Donaldson's Dept. Store in downtown MLPS.
Also recognize Synder Drug store in these old commercials,,,they were everywhere in MN back in the day!
Speaking of vacs and Dayton's, back in 1981, an Aunt of mine was ready for a new vacuum, and called the Electrolux man to bring one out.
He never showed up for whatever reason, so a few days later, she went to Rochester MN (50 mile drive) and bought a new Panisonic Jet Flow PowerTeam at Dayton's at Apache Mall.
I have the Panisonic in my collection, and she took excellent care of it.
She said she got it on sale for about 120.00-130.00,,,,i think its the mid line model. Dosent have ALL the bells and whistles, but does have some.
Have always loved this vac, its fun to use. Ive found out from this forum that these Panisonic machines were made in Japan, and were extremely durable.
I have to agree, as even the hose is still in pristene condition, and this vac has been used ALOT in its life.
Will always be thankful to that Lux man for NOT showing up that day.
If he would have shown up, she would have bought an Olympia, which are still a dime a dozen now.

You're right. I watched an episode tonight and saw Donaldson's right before (or after, I forget) the shots in the IDS Center.
