Electrolux's Finest- POST 1980

VacuumLand – Vintage & Modern Vacuum Enthusiasts

Help Support VacuumLand:

Diamond Jubilee, hands down with HEPA bag and the Aerus cabon filter after that. But partially because I bought one new on our first farm from an Elux salesperson.

I don't have any allergies though and using a Connie on hardwood floors blows allergians everywhere.....sooooo, I pretty much go for the 'expereince' of vacuuming.

I recognize that the Super J, Oly One and Silverado all use the the bigger motor the Super J model ushered in. I have about 5 Super J's waiting to be restored. If I find a nice Silverado or Oly One, I'll pick up one of those too.

However, when I get serious about cleaning because company is coming...roll out the Diamond J.

Which model was it where they started to get cheap with things and use a cheaper motor that would apparently fall apart while you were using it? Was that the Diamond J or a different model?

Mike, that would be the Diamond J and an ill-deserved reputation at that. I've restored a dozen of them and never saw a bad motor...not to mention ours went on for a decade until a cleaning lady waged war against it. She never killed the motor but managed to break most of the plastic parts...in hindsight I wished I had wrangled that back from the ex and restored it for sentimental reasons. She was teasing me the other day that she thought she still had it somewhere.

The motor was louder than previous Electrolux motors but was still made in the US at a different plant I'm told. Electrolux stood solidly behind it and as in the past, fixed any problems. It's doubtful you will find any used Diamond J's still running with original motor issues. But you have to be cognizant that people torture some vacs just because they are second hand....like pulling one out to suck up some wet mess....I see that more than anything else in used Diamond J's.

That's a bit of a tough call since the models are really so similar, even from metal to plastic.

Obviously by my name, you can tell I am a fan of the Diamond Jubilee, so that would probably be my top pic. I've never had a motor problem. I really like how the bag door and cord winder/rear cover have a contrasting color, versus most of the other 1205-based models that have body-colored ends and/or white ends. That being said, I'm also really fond of the Ultralux Classic with that deep blue paint.

As for the plastic body models, my top pic is probably the Guardian Ultra. I love how it's the only classically-styled Lux to ever have a fully-sealed HEPA system (WHY didn't that setup transfer to the Legacy and Classic when the Ultra was replaced???). I also think that the rounded, silver top with its pin-hole grille is just extremely satisfying to look at. I could kick myself for selling the one I bought (pic attached for reference). My second choice would be some version of the Epic 6000/Lux Legacy. It looks really nice in the original blue/white color scheme (like the Ultralux Classic), but I'm also partial to the all-white version from the late 2000s/2010s and the current black version. I'm not wild about the gray version from the mid-90s nor the white/light blue version from the early 2000s.

The Guardian Platinum seems like a great machine, but I cannot get over the fact that it isn't even made by Aerus in Virginia like the Legacy and Classic. To be honest, I really don't even know for certain its heritage... did Aerus REALLY participate equally in engineering it, or did they just throw in some cash to license a copy of the Lux Intelligence, add their own accessories, and basically phone it in? Either way, it's not a purebred Aerus/Electrolux product. And I've read good things about the Renaissance/Epic/Guardian machines, but I've never owned one, they're pretty far removed from classic styling, and they seem to scratch up pretty easily compared to other vacs from that same time frame.

I guess I would have to go with the Epic 6500/Lux Legacy.
Simply because it's the model that I have the most experience with.
I have three of them:
A dark blue/tannish one, which I think is early.
A 75th Anniversary.
And a white with blue trim, with the Good Housekeeping decal.

More recently, I rescued a dark grey Ambassador III from the curb.
I didn't expect to like that model as much, and I was never too fond of that color.
But, it's in amazing condition, and it's really grown on me. Even the color!
It only came with the power nozzle and wands.
I bought on-board tools for it, plus a set of aluminum wands and flip floor tool, and finally, a matching dark grey Sidekick.
Yup. I became an Ambassador fan
The Epic 6500 might still be my favorite by a slight margin though.
