Electrolux Z710 UK Model - cord rewind to re-spring

Hi Guys, I'm new to this site and find it great to find a website who share the love for vacuum cleaners. I've always had a love for the Electrolux Z series cleaners. I use a Z302 weekly is still going strong. I've always wanted to buy another and renovate it. So I bought the Z710 recently and it was in a state when I bought it but cleaned it up. It is now looking great!!

The only thing wrong with it is the cord didn't retract when you pressed on the lever. So I took this apart and super-glued this back and it now works to release the break.

To get to this you have to take the cord housing out and take the spring off, like a silly sod I didn't take a photo or memories how it works and so I need to re-spring it. It worked before I took it off, and now I cannot for the life of me remember how the mechanism worked.

Any ideas or if anyone has one of these machines and has they taken the front off to see how this is setup? There is a way of doing it, but nothing in the internet shows how it works.

The wheel and tension spring looks similar to what was on the U.S. Ultralux canisters, but the housing it's mounted in is different.


 


If I were to estimate: you'd need to remove the screw seen while holding firmly the piece your unscrewing.  Then I'd think the wheel and tension wheel should lift out..... carefully without letting it unspool.


 


There must be a way to release the cord from the housing.  do you have a side picture of where the cord goes in?

thanks for replying, yeah doing my research into these types of springs on vacuum they look to be part of one casing, whereas this coil is separate.

There is no tension on the coil itself which is odd as how does it get it's tension to retract back in.

It did work before I took it off to fix the brake mechanism. Thinking it would be easy enough to put back on I didn't take any photos before.

There is no tension on the spring because all of it is on the small winged spool. As soon as you wind up a fair part of the spring on the bigger spool, you will grdually get some tension.

The spring must be clockwise on one spool and counterclocwise on the other, that's the way tension builds up. I took an Elux winder apart last year, it looks like it works the same way as yours.

ALWAYS WEAR GLOVES AND SAFETY GOGGLES when you work on these springs, they are sharp and strong, they can cut your fingers in a flash !

Sorry, the only picture I can find is the one showing the mess when I accidentally let go one end of the spring. I then decided to wind as much of the spring as possible on the winged spool, attaching it with zip-ties periodically to hold it tight.

Then I started winding it back on the bigger spool.
