Electrolux XXX Suction

Since I only own one Model XXX (which I rebuilt myself), I have a question to throw out to those of you who are familiar with Luxes in general:

Have you ever compared the suction of a Model XXX with a 535 watt motor with a newer model Lux using the SAME wattage motor (like a Model G or a Model L?)

While my Model XXX does have strong suction, I've noticed that, in comparison, the suction of my Model G and Model L is stronger. Mind you, the motor in my Model XXX is healthy--the brushes are good and the fan unit is clean. I've also tested the airflow of the machine...with my hand over the suction inlet, NO air comes out of the exhaust whatsoever. The ONLY thing I can think of that might retard the air flow is the cloth bag.

Has anyone else ever compared the suction of the XXX against a newer Lux, and if so, what did you discover?

Model 30 suction

My Electrolux XXX doesn't seem to have as much suction as some of the later XXX, either. I first thought it was the gasket around the motor, but that wasn't case. Both of my model 30's have weak suction.


 


Brian, I think your onto something when you said the cloth bag could be the problem. It seems to suck to the front of the motor/fan blocking airflow. I've also tried using a cloth bag with a good rubber seal. Still I can't tell much difference.

Does the suction increase when the after filter is out? I had the same problem, so I cleaned the after filter and I've noticed a dramatic increase in suction. The after filter was caked with dirt on mine though .

After Filter and Cloth Bag:

I have a new after filter in my XXX--either with it in or out, the suction strength doesn't change.

I think the issue with the cloth bag may be that fine dirt gets trapped in the pores of the material, and it is very hard to beat it all out when emptying the bag.

I wonder if the motor in the XXX doesn't spin as fast as the motors in the newer machines?

I have a Model XXX, and a Model AE, I think the AE has better suction than the Model XXX, I also have a Olympia One, which I think has better suction than the XXX and the AE.

I think the suction just got better over the model yrs. So...it's comparing apples to oranges. My 1205 has slightly more powerful suction than my Jetson turquoise G....and one of my Jetson G's has more suction than the other G. The pull on that 1205 is pretty fierce.

XXX suction vs other Luxes

A couple of things to keep in mind here. Notice that model 30 and 60 fans are different than the newer G's, L's and 1205's etc. The 30 and 60 fans are thicker and smaller diameter with the others being thinner and of greater diameter. Consider also the motor it'self. You can have two identical 30's sitting right next to each other with brand new perfectly sealing cloth bags with one 30 pulling greater than the other. One motor is in perfect tune the other hasn't been touched. By perfect tune I mean clean fans, freshly greased bearings and the real important one- clean commutators. Yes running the all important stone on an old motor's commutators can pick up a very noticeable increase in RPM's and greater suction. I do think the L, G and 1205 motors may have run at slightly higher RPM's than the older 30/60 E and S motors despite there identical 535 watt ratings but I could be wrong on that. If anybody has any further information please chime in.

Lux XXX suction

If the hose is the old cloth type, it will hamper the suction. They have leaks and should be replaced. The old cloth hoses become stiff and difficult to use.

XXX bag conversion

Has anyone tried the bag converter? It uses a style C bag (the style all Lux tanks made since 1952 use) I think this was it here?

I don't know if it will really improve the XXX's suction?
