Electrolux XXX motor problem

well this is lovely. the reason I had it apart in the first place. the motor shifts when I turned it on and made this sound like you're holding a hose against your hand and makes that noise as you slowly move it away for a second. I thought it was the bag not sealing as I first turn it on. I took the exhaust plate off and I can see the motor shift when I turn it on. the mounting nuts seem tight and the rubber seal couldnt possibly be more soft. wish I could post videos on here to show.

I was just afraid this might be something serious. it doesn't really seem to have an effect on the performance. can someone please help?

Yes

It can ruin things. Take the motor out.
Here is two suggestions. 3m makes a thick double side adhesive mounting tape. I used it to mount window covers on my car.
The other is get insulation for automobile and put it inside where the motor sits.
It's a small problem now but it will eventually ruin things.

the mounting ring is done for replace it take the motor half appart and put a new ruber ring thts the only reason electrolux motor move no Le that will never work i have 3 electrolux canister thats the only reason those motor move his mounting ring is kaput and has a tear time for a new one .

You had it apart, did you have the motor out of it and disassembled by chance? The motor bracket if I remember is mounted with rubber spacers. Here are some photos of how the machine is supposed to look motor assembled into the housing. I do have access to parts if need be and can ship them.

It's the rubber ring. You'll notice in Mike's photo, the three 'cross members' that are in the middle - between the motor and the outer ring. One of these is broken and allows the motor to shift. You need a donor XXX with a good ring.

I think I may have it fixed

I hope this holds- the 3 little "shock absorbers" I call them, one had come separated from the metal plate. I used some crazy glue and reinstalled the motor and seems perfect now

Those always dry out over decades of sitting. That machine is close to 80 years old now. Glad you got it fixed.

I had the same problem

I had the same issue in my model E. I took some #12 gauge wire and made a bracket that I screwed onto the two screws crossing over the piece for it to hold it from shifting forward. It worked. You may want to do that too to help relieve the pressure on your crazy glue fix.

Yeah, I’m looking for a companion too. Period correct attachments are plentiful on eBay just search Electrolux attachments, not everyone knows they are for the XXX so searching just this way yields more results. Though if you are going to use the vacuum for regular use, the classic flip over rug and floor tool introduced in 1953 and still in production by Aerus today and Included standard with todayks guardian platinum...Is very convenient as you don’t have to change tools when going from floors to carpet, just unclickmit, flip, and click it back on! Tons of them available on eBay and I think member detroitdirtbag has one for sale here!

If you have an air compressor...

Use the compressor to blow out all that dust on the motor and It will look like new....just do it outside because it sends clouds of dust out but you will be so impressed with the results after cleaning it with the compressor...hopefully you have the compressed air blowing attachment, if not, they are cheap to buy. Most compressors come with them though.

I did this this summer on my model F from the late 50’s...wow what a difference, even the wires now look like new!

I have one somewhere

before I stored it away in the shed a couple of years ago after the mishap I think the companion was still with it. I dug the old machine out and brought it back to the house and lucky me I have an original cord stowed away. the motor sounded real nice and quiet until I heard the vibrating sound of the motor against the inside wall of the vacuum. only reason I quit using it is because the machine end plug on the cordwinder blew a few sparks and blew a breaker.

I replaced the cord end on mine

I don’t have the cordwinder but the cord end on mine and the last inch or two of the cord was getting pretty deteriorated so I did cut off the original Belsen end and put on a round rubber plug end, I didn’t want it to get to the point of shorting out or sparking fearing it might damage the motor or cause a fire. While it’s nice to have some original things, sometimes we just have to sacrifice in the effort of safety.
