Electrolux XXX disassembly for restoration

Greetings,

I have a few Elctrolux XXX and 2 LX's that are not cosmetically perfect and need to be taken apart so I can polish the chrome and remove some rust; especially on the side panels. I've tried Googling for disassembly instructions with no luck. Can someone out there help me Please!

XXX Disassembly

1. Remove the rear cover and filter by loosening the two large knurled knobs on each side of the rear cover.

2. On the same screw shaft as the thumb screws for the rear cover are two small hex nuts. Remove these hex nuts and the very long shaft to which they are connected will come loose. Inside the motor housing, these two shafts hook around two little lips on the inside wall.

3. Once the hex nuts are loose and the shafts come free from the lips, you can pull off the chromed rear ring section. You will see a long, thin rubber gasket around the back end of the motor housing. It may come off with the ring. Be sure to save it as you will need to put it back on when you reassemble the machine.

4. Then you can get at the motor which is secured by three rubber-mounted brackets in the newer ones, and bakelite mounts in the older ones. In either case, proceed carefully and delicately -- the bakelite will probably be brittle, and the rubber will likely be hardened.

5. Once the motor mount brackets are loosened, grab the rear end of the motor with your fingers and pull slowly but firmly and the entire motor housing, which is held secure inside a rubber diaphragm, will slide out.

6. From there, you're on your own. I have never tried removing the fans or fan cover, because it's a B#$CH getting the fans back in again. They have to be replaced in a precise order and configuration or the balance will be thrown off. Unless the motor has serious bearing problems (unlikely), I would not attempt this especially if you are a beginner.

LX Disassembly

1. Remove the rear cover by loosening the large thumb screw in the center of the blower hole. On the older ones, this is a round knurled knob that may be very tight; you may have to use pliers to loosen it. On the newer ones, it's a four-sided knob that's much easier to remove.

2. Once you have the rear cover off, you'll see four screws holding the flat baffle plate that, once upon a time, held a filter in place. Remove the four screws and the baffle plate will come off.

3. Then, you can proceed as above with the XXX to remove the motor, as the motor mounts are the same as the XXX.

In fact, the motor mounts are essentially the same for the XXX, LX/LXI, E, AE, S, T, F and R although the 'footprints' of the S and R are a bit narrower than the others.

The mounts may also be the same for the G but to tell you the truth I've never taken a G apart so I don't know.

I have taken apart an L, a long time ago, and it seeeeems that there was something different about the mounts but I can't recall now.

I am pretty sure that from the 1205 on they are rather different, and of course into the latest models they are completely different.

And another thing

Be sure you have good light and note that on some machines a screw or bolt attaching trim or handle can be preventing the motor from moving back - so you need to remove or partially remove that screw to clear the way. Watch for falling nuts.
