Hi.

This morning I was using my 1948 Electrolux XXX vacuum cleaner. My grandmother and my great grandmother bought it new together -they made every other payment and one week it was at my grandparent's house the other week it was at my great grandmother's house- they would shuffle it back and fourth on a weekly basis.

But I digress,
As I emptied it, I thought about the cloth bag and an idea hit me: what about using a replacement Lux 30/xxx bag as a pattern and making a new bag out of Micron Filtration Cloth- the kind used in industrial dust collectors. I wonder if anyone has tried this before?

What are your thoughts on it?

I think you are saying

To make a whole new bag out of newer and better material, and I think that is a fantastic idea, I don't see why it wouldn't work wonderfully.

Hans, unfortunately it wouldn't work out well to replace the bag material with HEPA Cloth material. Problem with the HEPA Cloth bags is they are meant to be thrown out each time. If you have ever tried to empty the dirt from a HEPA Cloth bag thru the bag collar, you will find afterwards there is a layer of fine dust captured between the cloth layers. Assuming this is what Derek is referring to, the bag material would eventually become discolored & too dirty & would require washing, which you could only do so many times.

Derek, I think the best & simplest solution in your case, assuming you want better filtration, is to find a upright or canister HEPA Cloth bag of comparable length, & use it to make a bag liner for the cloth bag in your Electrolux. Simply insert the bag, wrap the bag around the metal bag collar, then put into the vacuum & put the bag cover on. You can either throw it out or empty it when the bag is full, & if you empty it, just throw it out when the bag is filthy & has been washed a couple of times & can't be used anymore. I would think a Hoover Type A HEPA Cloth bag would be the ideal length, & that bag can be bought easily in bulk online on Amazon.

XXX bag

You seem to be thinking of what newer Compact/TriStar use. That is the newer type cloth bag material with a paper bag inside.Should work great with the proper size/shape.
Standard paper liners for Electrolux XXX and similar tank cloth bags were a common vac store item in the 50s-60s.

close but not quite..

Those are some pretty good ideas.
I'm thinking of upgrading the entire cloth filtration - eliminating the need for paper liners. I was thinking of the cloth dust collection bags used on Wood Shop dust collectors. The replacement Lux 30 dust bags have nice, new rubber gaskets and new metal rings, but the ones I have seen in person look like they have bed sheet grade muslin for the bag material. I have been thinking of using one of them as a pattern and using the dust collector bag (after cutting, trimming and resewing it to fit) on the replacement lux 30 bag ring. I can see a spring project forming....
