Electrolux X1 - Information Wanted!

Well I was certainly not expecting this as a leaving present from my work colleagues!  Yes, it is an Electrolux X1!!


 


And that is all I know about it admittedly, as Electrolux is not my "main" brand and even if it were a HOOVER, I would still be pretty clueless considering it seems to be from the 20s or 30s. 


 


I will let you peruse the photographs in which you will see it seems to have a full tool set, hose and something I have never had on a vacuum - a bayonet light fitting power cable!!  I of course knew these were somewhat popular in the 20s and 30s when power sockets were sparse but have never seen one in the flesh. 


 


It would be important to note that I have not powered this machine on due to the fact that it only has the bayonet power cable, but given that the cable is in immaculate condition, would it be safe enough to do so with a modern-day light socket? 


 


Anyway, enough rambling - I am over the moon with the cleaner and am eager to know more about it and to thereafter restore and (hopefully) put the cleaner into use, even if it means having to change the power cable.

Beautiful machine!

That is quite an unique antique and amazingly complete. It would be interesting to know how they came across it. The thing is in such excellent original condition, I wouldn't be inclined to do much to it in the way of restoration beyond cleaning it up and making it safely operational. After all, it's only original once!

The cord looks like its detachable. If it were mine, I wouldn't alter that original cord but would be more inclined to find or fabricate one that would fit a conventional electrical outlet. Before trying to turn it on, it might be wise to take a look inside it to make sure there aren't any burnt wires or other scary stuff that might produce, shall we say, a shocking experience.

I completely agree Edgar and will not be doing anything to it other than giving it a simple clean up.


 


Being the person I am, I will likely end up using it with the bayonet fitting it has, but should I find a replacement with a standard plug "end" I will buy it and fit it.  You are right though that it is detachable so this is entirely possible.  What may not be possible though is finding the cable!

Well, I could not resist!! 


 


10 minutes ago I plugged the cable into my light socket and guess what?  The Lux purrs like a kitten.  The suction was almost non-existent as the cloth bag is clogged with years of dust as was the filter pad, but the bag is now in the washing machine on a delicate cycle and the filter pad is in the bin, ready to be replaced with a regular electro-static filter.


 


It can definitely be said that my two (and only) favourite vacuum cleaner brands are HOOVER and Electrolux.

Just a bit of extra information. The model number 1127 indicates that its a model 11 made in 1927. It appears to be in excellent condition.

When you consider that Electrolux made it through World War II, all the bombings, then recovery - to survive until 2015, it's in amazing original condition. Even the metal hose is good. You are very lucky and blessed to have that machine, it's in Museum Quality condition. Congratulations on a 'once in a lifetime' gift from your co-workers.

It was the thought that counted. And, yes, for an appliance to have survived that long, it is in amazing condition.

LUX MODEL 11, 1926-30.

Hello James,

Electroluxs' first true cylinder cleaner, no 'pistol grip type handle'. ball race bearings. Came out the same year as the Hoover MODELS 700 and budget 543.

UK versions made in LUTON 1927-30. The ADVERTISING LEAFLET in my possession proclaimed that this new model had 'amplified suction'.

I to have a nice X1 (Along with 5,10,12,16,18,25,etc)

Early model X1's were fitted with nickel/chromium externally plated hoses; from circa 1928 thay were covered in a black/white spiral patterned braid.

Indeed it was.  Unfortunately my feelings towards the company itself (I.E. finding out that they had no legal right to make me redundant when they did) are what they are, but my colleagues were indeed very kind to me.
