Electrolux Upright Thread

I remember reading a thread where Fred(Hoover Celebrity) was dissembling an Electrolux upright, I believe it was the Epic series. Anyway, I have searched the archives with no luck.

Friday I purchased three Electrolux Uprights: the Discovery II, III and an Epic 2500 SR. The Epic had a bad motor (it would start slowing down and it had a burning electrical smell). I was able to make two complete units from the parts of the Epic 2500 SR. They were all very nasty and all the plastic parts had to be washed outside, I used a pressure washer but it blasted the plastic parts down the sidewalk. It was mess, way too much pressure.

Both uprights run great and I am very pleased with the performance. Guess I am just an Electrolux guy.

It really surprises me that people pay a lot of money for an expensive vacuum and abuse it. All three still have the stickers from the local Electrolux branch office here in Tulsa.

I do have a question.. can an exhaust filter (after filter) be purchased for the Discovery II and III?

They are pretty worn, especially the bumper on the Epic 2500 w/ the discovery II motor and handle. The plastic is very yellowed on the Discovery II w/ Discovery III handle and power nozzle hood. It looks like it has been used in a retail store and stored under a florescent light.

Usually the yellow color on an Electrolux upright is when the vacuum has resided in a smoking house. The nicotine in the air will discolor plastic. The after filter can be purchased as a separate piece for the upright. The frame sticks onto the left side of the machine where the exhaust vents are.

The Electrolux uprights are some of my favorite uprights- they don't clean very well and aren't special, but they are built strongly and look awesome.

Maybe someone has a photo of the dinosaur upright that Electrolux first came out with. Huge motor with two belts!

Thanks, a smokers home is a bad place for anything. I plan on going to my Electrolux branch on Tuesday to pick up some bags and they are going to be expensive.

We had a Discovery II. I thought it was an awesome vacuum, but the handle broke after years of use. It cleaned VERY well. Everything visible was picked up in one stroke. Now I don't know how well it deep cleaned, but for daily stuff it was great! It cleaned bare floors in one sweep. Also a Lux man here too.

Congrats.... looks like it was a smokers vacuum! They usually smell pretty bad, hope yours doesn't. My friend Larry loves his Prolux.

I used to have one of those early Electrolux uprights with the two belts and push button handle release. The wheels fell off, and I never liked it, so I threw it away to make room for things I like better about 2 months ago. Here's an old picture.

It really doesn't smell after I washed all the plastic parts in soap and water. Electrolux's first upright looks like a real beast and I read on the forum that it didn't perform that well.

I know the Discovery may not clean as well as a Kirby or any other direct air vacuum, but I really enjoy using it. It really seems to groom the carpet well tough. I like the uniform wide path, no lines in between look that it gives my carpet, looks like a professional has vacuumed the house.

I dissembled the motor today, washed the fans and used some three in one oil on both bearings. It doesn�t growl when I shut the power off, which is better. It is disappointing that the upright isn�t as quiet as my 1205 or L. I hope that the after filter will muffle the sound a bit.

Overall, I really like the upright and the ability to shut off the brush roll and the ability to plug in hose at the top.

I have several of the first big Lux uprights, 2 of the grey colored ones. My guess is they came out with early Silverados. I also have close to a dozen or so of the Discovery era uprights, a couple of Epics, and a couple of Pro-Lux's. I hope to thin out my collection of vacs as I'm rapidly running out of room!

I understand that bags are no longer avalible for the older(pre Discovery) Lux uprights. If you have one, and want to use it, stock up on the bags, if you can find them.
My sister had one of these older Lux uprights for a few years,(about the same time as the Silverado), but the suction at the hose end was practically non existant, especially when the bag was getting full,,so i wondered how good the suction could be at the brush roll. The set up for the hose was weird,,you had to screw on a flat adapter over the bag compartment, that the hose locked into,,leaving the bag door flapping open. Was very awkward to use.
I remember the machine was VERY hard to push if the carpet pile was thick,, and your arm got tired easily. It also had a small brush roll,about the same size as the older Lux PNs, as wasnt very agressive. Didnt look like it groomed the carpet very well either. Maybe needed a new belt. Sure looked like a powerful vac tho. I talked her into a Kirby Heritage 2, and she hasnt had or needed a new vacuum since.

I just sold my elux upright in brand new condition and all attachments. oh well I was never really that impressed with it. and it helped pay some bills.

i hated when my work switched from the prolux to an oreck. we had the newer one with loop handle, excellent for commercial carpet cleaning and sooo easy to change the bag.

It serves its purpose well. It grooms the carpet nicely and the design is really simple. It is so convenient to plug the hose into the top of the machine. I have been using it this weekend to vacuum my grandparent’s house. They are elderly and hardly ever vacuum, although my grandmother does keep her house clean the best she can.

Anyway they have two dogs in their house and they shed like crazy. I have already filled one bag with the Electrolux, so I know that it is doing its job. However, I did follow up with Kirby just to make sure that I got everything I could out of the carpet.

Overall, I think the Electrolux is great for convenience. To test a vacuums performance I usually run the vacuum to the edge of a large area rug and lift up on the vacuum a little to see if it will lift the rug off the floor. The Electrolux did lift the rug off the floor, so I know it does have suction at the power head. Again I have to agree with everyone on the forum I know that it’s not a real deep cleaner. But I wasn’t really expecting it to be.

And really this probably true of all Electroluxes, it can’t be any worse than Super J or Olympia with a newer power nozzle. I just have to admire the Electrolux brand and accept they aren’t as good at deep cleaning as some other brands. For everyday use a deep cleaner is really not necessary for me.

I use DVC style C and U bags they are well priced and I've been told DVC makes them for Aerus/Lux. The quality is good.
