Electrolux Ultralux LX

About a year after completing graduate school in 1991, I bought my first brand new vacuum -- an Electrolux Ultralux LX. I gave it away many years ago and sometimes kick myself for doing it.

Well, I just happened on this one on Ebay. It was hard to tell what shape it was in because the photos were poorly staged. So I threw caution to the wind and bought it because the price was right. It came on Thursday and I was pleased to see that it was in really great shape.

So I completely disassembled it, including the motor and power nozzle, and gave it a good cleaning. Now, it runs like a top!

I can't remember, but I think my original Ultralux came with a braided hose.

I've seen some where the chrome trim has a crinkled finish. This is just like my old one, with a smooth finish.

The plastic cover is cracked in the corner so I'll see if a touch of epoxy might fix that.

I was surprised to see that Electrolux went with a larger 5.7" diameter motor. To accommodate the larger size, they had to redesign the mounting lug inside the bulkhead.

Other than the cracked cover, there is a small dent on the bottom. That's not really noticeable.

I am very pleased with my find! Shipping has gotten outrageous but I couldn't resist this find!

Nice machine! All in all, I think you're better off with that vinyl hose. In my experience, it's the best performance upgrade you can give any Electrolux canister.

I have an Ultralux LX, too, and it did come with the braided hose. Also, the top has the crinkle finish in chrome.

I was fortunate to get the original October 1992 sales slip from a Craigslist seller. If you contact an Aerus store, it can give you the original sales date of yours using your serial #.

Serial affixes on mine are M_E, and the production # was in the 34,000s.

Not sure if you know, but it was one of the first Electrolux Corporation cleaners to have the lighted power nozzle (1692). Others were the Diplomat LX, Genesis LX and whatever central vac was being manufactured at the time. LX is the symbol for Lux, which is the SI unit [FR: Système International (d'unités)] of illumination.

That's lovely. I have the "Grand Marquise" version of this model and really like it a lot, other than the noise (spoiled by the hushed whisper of the XXX and G!). Mine came with the original hose but I did not like it -- too short, heavy and stiff. The new genuine coiled vinyl hose is easily a foot longer, much lighter in weight and much more pliable.

Congratulations on your find ! I have both the Ultralux and Grand Marquise. The chrome trim on my Ultralux has the crinkled finish that you described.

Crinkle Finish

That crinkle finish was used entirely on another variation of the model 1521 Ultralux..... I personally like the look, although it’s purely aesthetics! Here’s a couple of mine with the crinkle finish and full chrome body.

Ultralux lx dissasembly

Great Post! Can you describe how you got to the motor for removal. I have to replace my motor and I don't want to tear into it until I have an idea as to how. Thanks for any help you can give!

The motor is easy to get to.

1) Remove four screws from the cover. Two are under the blower port cover. One is on the top handle and the last one is up front by the bag door. Once those are removed the top will lift off. You can then remove the wire leads on the on/off switch to completely remove the cover.

2). Once the top cover is removed, remove three screws from the cord winder. Two are on top and one is on the bottom. Once those are removed, use a slotted screwdriver and hammer to gently tap the cord winder off.

3) Once the cord winder is off, you can see three wires that connect to the cord winder. Be sure first to mark where they go and then remove them. Two of the terminals are connected together and mount to a single post on the cord winder. They simply slide apart. Next, there's one more connection from the motor field to the black wire on the wiring harness that needs to be separated. All wire should be disconnected by now.

4) Inside the motor housing, remove the four nuts (one at each corner) holding the motor cover and motor in place. Once those are removed, the motor cover will lift off and the motor itself can be pulled out.

This series of Electrolux canisters

I've always been confused as to how to identify these vacuums, whatever the official color of the body is called. As far as I can tell, there are three models: Grand Marquis, Ultralux, and Ultralux LX. The Grand Marquis has no name marking and silver top trim, correct? The Ultralux has its name on the back and textured blue top trim, then the Ultralux LX has a different style name label and has silver top trim that was either flat or textured, or is there some other combination? I could swear that I've seen that body with blue top trim and no name label, but maybe not. In any case, could someone with solid knowledge describe how to distinguish these models, perhaps the official name of that grayish-white color?

by the variations of this series. I wonder if, at times, Electrolux built built the same model with slight trim changes.

Electrolux Model Diamond Jubilee

Hey Guys!

Did you all forget about the Diamond Jubilee? It's also a model 1521. Isn't this model in there with the aforementioned models, too?

And, Eurekastar......my recently acquired Diamond Jubilee also has that same crack in the back only on the right side. Strange how the crack pattern is nearly identical! I wonder if it's a stress crack somehow?

And, gentlemen, HUMAN is spot-on about the replacement vinyl hoses. Even if they are the aftermarket brand/version, they are far superior than the OEM equipment hands down! They are longer, more supple, and will enhance the performance 10-fold. I have used and purchased the aftermarket hoses and have had nothing but good luck with them. Certainly worth the money and at half price--just about! You can't beat them!
