I posted my original post in the wrong area - I am not trying to double post.

Elderly neighbor is moving and has offered me their Electrolux Ultralux Classic 1521 for $100. They do not remember when they purchased it. It seems to be in good working condition. It appears to have a lot of suction at the machine but at the end of the hose it is substantially less.

Is there small cracks inside of the hose or is there some form of blockage?

Is this a good vacuum and what can you tell me about it?

Does it have a good quality motor design?

Are they easy to service and can you get parts to repair them?

Is it worth $100 in this condition?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Hey Gordon, does this machine still have the woven hose? If so that is more than likely where the loss of suction is. The interior rubber disentegrates over time & breaks down, thus losing alot of the suction thru cracks & splits. A new replacement vinyl hose would be ideal for it. I have several Luxes & the one I have with a vinyl hose is much more maneuverable & user friendly.

Someone else here can better answer your questions on part availability & motor durability.

$100 is alot for this vintage of machine that is 20 or more years old I would think especially considering it may need a replacement hose. There's one on Ebay at $90 in pretty rough shape right now, which is too much.

Thanks

Thanks for the reply. I looked up the 1521 that is on eBay, and the hose looks just like my neighbors. The description of the one on eBay also mentions week suction at the end of the hose, so this appears to be quite typical. Sounds like a bad design.

My neighbors 1521 does not have near the attachments as the one on eBay. If I can get them to sell it for $40 or $50, I still might be interested, but I would like to know if this model has the better designed motor. I think I remember that at one point Electrolux had cheapened their motor in some of their vacuums and I really do not want to buy it and have the motor die and for it to be unserviceable.

Anyone know more details on the Electrolux Ultralux Classic 1521?

This is...

one of my favorite Electrolux units. The motor is the same as what is in most of the plastic bodied canisters like the 2100/LE/6500's etc. I agree, with a woven hose however, that the unit is probably not worth 100. If you can get it for around 50 or so, put a new hose on it, maybe install a new motor, you could have one heck of a great cleaner. Of course, alot depends on the condition of the power nozzle, attachments, exterior of the body, etc.

Gordon, just so you are aware, only the Sidekick, bare floor tool & one set of those wands actually went with that machine. The rest are for a much older Lux model & I don't know what the plastic attachments go to. They even have the wrong bag in the machine & extra bags are wrong style. Those go with a newer model Lux.

An Electrolux Branch Manager, and salesman who had been in the business from the 1950s thru the late 1990s told me once that any machine that has the red lettering inside and above the bag door that reads "Use Only Genuine Electrolux Bags" has a cheaper and not near as long a lasting motor than any of the older models before it.
He must have been right, because i see alot of the older machines, Model G, 1205, Golden J,Olympia, ect, and even model XXX, model E, ect., that are still going strong today.

Interesting Information

"...that any machine that has the red lettering inside and above the bag door that reads "Use Only Genuine Electrolux Bags" has a cheaper and not near as long a lasting motor than any of the older models before it."

Any chance you have a picture of this text on one of the Electrolux Vacuums?

Gordon

I'm not sure how true that is about the motors being cheaper made(although it wouldn't surprise me), but I looked inside my UltraLux commemorative edition (model 1521) and it does have that statement in red lettering. I've included a photo of it for you.

Elux motors

The OO and most Silverados had great motors. This was changed on the Diamond Jubilee and the last Silverados and was troublesome. You can tell if a Silv has the newer motor by a space between bottom of bag chamber and front of motor(about an inch)as well as cordwinder grommet with an 'eyebrow'extending from top.The newer motor WAS improved and by time of most UltraLux it should once again give good service.
