Electrolux Super J

Sunday at a flea market I acquired an Electrolux Super J with power nozzle, it also had the dusting brush and floor nozzle. It was only $15 so I picked it up even though I am not to fond of Electrolux, I really liked the gold color. I was wanted to know when this model was made and if it was worth what I paid for it.

Super J.

Yup, it's worth what you paid for it, and then a whole lot more! It was made after the 1205 and the 50th anniversary models and dates to the mid to late 1970s. It's powerful, reliable, simple to use, bags are plentiful, and is a lot of fun.

My Super J was my 1st vintage vac. I bought it while a sophomore in college and have been using it as a daily driver ever since. Mine now needs some TLC as the machine screatches a bit on startup and shutdown. I think it's probably dry bearings. I have no idea how to fix it right now, nor the knowledge of how to access the motor, so it is seldom used these days.

was made from 1975-1978. Michael's mom had one, now it lives in my collection.
Properly maintained it will last forever!

I'd say it was worth it. I'm not even a big canister fan but I do like my Cdn Electroluxes and that model G I got in Ohio. I may even have to get more now

usually hwen someone buys an electrolux that is the last vacuum that they buy because they last soo long. alot of the orig owners who buy the vac at an early age the machine usually lasts longer than the person. I think that is kinda wierd totally worth the price and I would not get rid of it if I were you

Thank you so much for dating my machine for me and I am glad to know that it was worth getting at the price i paid. I hope to enjoy it even though I hate canisters but it will be great to clean steps and the cars along with vacuuming the whole house on occasion during the rotation through my daily vacuum line up

I agree it's a lovely machine, if a bit over the top design-wise with all the gaudy gold trim, but it is a great performer and will last a lifetime if not abused.

Does it have the original hose? That's the one big drawback of that series of machines - the last 1205, Golden Jubilee, Super J, Silverado, etc. -- the hoses for those machines are too short, too heavy, and quite thick. And they do not rotate at the machine end, making them awkward and difficult to use.

The single greatest improvement you could make to it, if it does have the original hose, to make it a top performer and a real joy to use, would be to replace the hose with a modern coiled hose that is longer and lighter in weight. Just do save the original hose if it's in respectable shape. It would be a creamy golden yellow in color with blue and white stripes.

...and a great machine. I've always favored it because of its gold color. It really stands out from the more bland Electroluxes. Many years of happy vacuuming!

One Of My Favorite Machines

I bought a Super J brand new in about 1976. A beautiful machine and a beautiful performer. As with most of the great machines I bought new over the years, she was traded in or given to someone. Charles is right, the original hose was quite distinctive. Goldish with a blue and white tracers, truly beautiful. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and I found that machine beautiful. Still have the gold B-8 polisher that went with it and a couple of PN-4s that would have come with the machine. Still does a fablous job. Here is a PN-4 with a rebuilt Silver G.

Yes, my super J does have the original hose with it, it is in fair shape it has some snags and fraying in the middle of the hose and also at the end with the handle grip, but still usable

Hmmmmmmm.... I'd bet my bottom dollar (and I'm not too far from it!) that there is significant leakage from this hose. Just because you can't hear or feel it doesn't mean it's not leaking. I really urge you to get a new hose for it, and you'll be totally blown away by the suction power.

Even if the hose is servicable, I'd still buy a replacement hose and use it instead of the more fragile original. Jeff was right that the machine will last forever, but, unfortunately, that doesn't include the hose.

Michael's mom's Super J came to me with a well used Olympia hose. I'm not a Lux expert by any means, but I could tell the handle grip had been serviced.
Last week Michael and I were visiting his dad, and we ran across the original Super J hose, hanging on a nail in the garage. I don't know how long it had been hanging there, but it crackled when I took it down off the nail.
I'll clean it up and keep it with the cleaner.

Jeff that is really neat that you and Michael found the orginal hose for Michael's moms machine. Did his dad have any idea when they might have gotten the new hose? I am sure this machine will always be special to Michael.

Nobody even remembers the cleaner being serviced, but it was a couple of times anyway, and with genuine parts too.
I'd never seen an original Super J hose, it's tan with a blue and white and one other color tracer in it.

I know the cleaner is very dear to Michael, he's said many times his mom LOVED her Electrolux!

I can definetly understand why Michael's mother loved her super j. with it's great performance and it's beautiful look with that gold finish. I think it iss great that you and Michael have that vacuum that means so much to him, which is the same way I feel about having grandma's convertible 1020.
