Hey I have an Electrolux Special model 1453 that has an issue. See, the rewinder has the cord all the way out and won't retract. I didn't see anything missing it wasn't tampered with. I don't know if there is a spring because I didn't see one so I am not sure.

All cord winders have a spring. They are similar to a window shade spring mechanism.

Btw, the Model 1453 was made from 1979-87 as the budget model to these standard models:

(brown, 1979-82) Model 1401-B "Olympia One"
(gray, 1982-84) Model 1505 "Silverado"
(sand/jade, 1984-87) Model 1521 "Diamond Jubilee"
(sand/taupe, 1987) Model 1521 "Marquise"

Check out this vid:

member bikerray posted an exploded diagram for the Olympia One cordwinder assembly in a thread.

here are some pics when I rewired mine (you can see the spring is tied, until it is assembled):

I just worked on my first........

because the Olympia I got yesterday, had a bad cord winder. When I opened it up, the reel was cracked and shattered mostly where the locking mechanism is located. I also saw pitting and scoring on the surface of the metal contact rings and later the contacts to the motor wiring. This thing got fried.

After I removed the actual cord, I saw where the cord outer casing had torn and furthermore, the wires inside had been exposed. Scoring at the point on the reel itself points to that could have been the source of the shorting.

Good news, I did not get hurt from the spring, I had a replacement cord reel and I learned how the cording is attached and will know how to change the cord if needed in the future.

Well

the rewinder itself has no spring whatsoever, it was never tampered with. When I looked at it, the mechanism that retracts had no wear or marks from tampering.

It HAS....

to have a spring and as an Electrolux it will be a coil spring like in a wind up wall clock. They aren't particularity complicated, but you do have to adhere to some general principles when restoring a recoil unit. After I've cleaned and lubed up everything, including the posts...I pull the cord all the way out and make sure I have at least a couple of coils in reserve. If you don't, you risk having the whole coil jump/release and you have no tension....i.e., you start over again.

The general design of the recoil is as old as the G and basically the same into the Diamond J....maybe there were changes to it after that....I dunno.
