The original Powerline and Widetrack were much better - pretty damn solid and the Widetrack had a wooden brushroll with really stiff bristles.

I agree, the bagless versions were shocking and forever clogging up. In those days, Dyson had patended the multi cyclone down to the last screw, so no other brands could touch it. Looked what happened over the Hoover Vortex. That's why there were so many crappy bagless vacs on the market in the late 90's/early 2000's. It wasn't until the original patents expired on the dual cyclone (and later, the root cyclone) that other manufacturers could start making multicyclonic machines.

The bagless versions of "The Boss" cleaners were one of the first, if not the first, offerings of a bagless cylonic model by a manufacturer other than Dyson.

The other manufacturers couldn't really do it right, I'm sure because the filters on even a modern vax gets so filthy after several uses, or like a week or so whereas something like a DC04 only gets fine powdery dust.

Considering a lot of people in the trade were underwhelmed with these when they first came out (comparing them against the likes of the Contour and Airstream), they actually turned out to be pretty robust cleaners. As long as the bags and filters were changed as recommended, and the brush roll kept clean, we never experienced many issues with them.

I do remember when the bagless versions first appeared. We all let out a collective groan, because this style of dust cup had already been used on the Power System bag/bagless combo, and was nothing but trouble then. Sure enough, it worked just as poorly on the Eureka type cleaners, and irate customers kept bringing them back with clogged filters and screaming motors with ruined bearings. Absolute crap.
