I hesitate to call myself an expert on this stuff, but I own at least one copy each of the PN1, PN2, PN4, PN4A and PN5, so I'll share what I know about those. If I am wrong about any of this, feel free to correct me and I will take no offense:

The PN1 shipped with the model G and early 1205's. It came in two color schemes--white with a teal bumper and teal with a white bumper. It was around from sometime in the 1960s until about 1970.

The PN2 was introduced around 1970 or '71 and shipped with later 1205's, including the Golden Jubilee variant, and the Super J. All PN2's were polished aluminum. Units for the 1205 typically had a teal elbow, while those for the Super J had an off white elbow.

The PN4, introduced in the mid-'70s, shipped with later Super J's and early Olympias. All PN4's had polished aluminum upper shells with a motor hump that extended the full width of the shell.

The PN4A came out in the late '70s and was used into the early '80s with later Olympia and early Silverado models. They differed from the PN4 in that the motor hump only extended about 2/3 of the way across the body instead of the full width. They were also painted to match the model they accompanied--chocolate brown with off-white plastics for the Olympia and graphite gray with light gray plastics for the Silverado. Underneath the shell, the PN4 and PN4A are identical and the shells are interchangeable between the two models.

The PN5, introduced in the mid-'80s, was the first of the L-shaped "Omniflow" nozzles, and shipped with the later Silverados and the first the Diamond J's. The plastic upper shells on some PN5's were dark gray and on others the were putty gray. I believe the darker ones shipped with the Silverado and the lighter ones shipped with the Diamond J. The omniflow design was also incorporated into the Discovery II upright and its various successors.

The PN6, introduced in the mid-to-late '80s, was essentially the same nozzle as the PN5 and came in the same two color schemes. The only difference between the two is the PN6 included an on/off switch on the top of the nozzle. I'm not sure at what point these were introduced. They may have been introduced during the Diamond J's model run. Later Omniflow nozzles incorporated a headlight into the design.

I'm not sure exactly when they were introduced, Olympia or Silverado era maybe, but the smaller SideKick power nozzles, designed for handheld use, came in several color schemes, some with a power switch and some without. They are all compatible with any powered Electrolux hose, going all the way back to the teal woven ones that shipped with the Model G and 1205. The later SideKick II units are not compatible with these earlier machines from the '60s, '70s and '80s because their power pins are set wider apart.

The PN-1 first launched in 1959 with the model Automatic F. It was two tone grey.
In 1960, it changed to turquoise and off white to match the Model G.
In 1967, it changed to brown and cream to match the Bronze Model G
In 1968, it changed to blue/white to match the 1205
In 1969, the plastic wand became the telescopic electric wand
In 1970, they introduced the steel wand and sheath.
There was also a commercial PN-1 to match the Commercial Automatic

Following are lists of Aerus LLC (formerly Electrolux Corporation & Electrolux Canada) power nozzles. The EC & Aerus lists were composed from my research. It isn’t completely accurate, but it is fairly so and a work in progress. Much of the information has been confirmed with user manuals, online information, conversations with Aerus representatives, and personal observations; although some is speculative such as some years and the less common nozzles for the CVS, commercial, & special models (for sales competitions). Also, at times a new tank was initially paired with an older nozzle for a short period which I likely did not record in the list. The Canadian data came from Doug Smith and aeoliandave’s Vacuumland posts. The two North American Electrolux affiliates shared R & D especially from 1956, when structural changes occurred after Axel Wenner-Gren sold his remaining shares in AB Electrolux, and even more after EC purchased a majority share of Electrolux (Canada) Ltd. in 1961; so there’s a lot of duplication or similarities; but colors were usually different and the labeling and model identifications unique to each.
.
Some features such as amps, spring-loaded or stationary rear wheels, switches or buttons, et cetera, have been omitted. In addition, over the years customers had brush roll options such as 3-row, stiff, gentle, & beater bars, which have not been included.

I used the exact model format Electrolux USA used on the base plate (which sometimes differed from printing); including the hyphen and the 'PN' prefix, which were discontinued at different times. It should also be noted that in 1994 Electrolux began using its current alphanumeric model identification, beginning with a letter prefix for the cleaner category (‘N’ for nozzle), a 3-digit model, and a letter suffix indicating a color distinction. To avoid confusion, the company has not used an ‘I’ or an ‘O’ suffix due to their similarities to digits; so keep that in mind if, for instance, in reading a model number from the nozzle that what may appear to be an ‘O’ is actually a ‘Q’ or a ‘G’. Also, the reason some letter suffixes lack continuity within a model line is often due to TriStar or privately-labeled nozzles being assigned the’missing’ designations.

For the last 25 years or so, Aerus LLC has typically changed the model numbers and/or suffix each time a change or upgrade has been made; although in previous years especially the same model number was retained despite variances in color or function. In those cases I've added a Roman numeral in parentheses indicating the chronological iteration.

Corrections or additions are appreciated.

Thanks, Kenny. I actually have a Hi-Tech 2100 manual which has a photo on the front cover showing a light sand gray PN5. Good eye.

Other corrections I made ...

• PN-1 (iii): 1962-66; Models R, G (aquamarine green), L (ivory), GH (teal green trim)—ivory hood w/teal green bumper; single ivory non-detachable plastic wand; 2 shorter cords—one from nozzle to wand, and one on hose; circuit breaker & clean-out

• PN-1 (iv.a): 1962-65; Model C.A.—ivory hood w/teal green bumper; metal elbow with wand release; 2-section metal wand; shorter cord plugs into hose cord; circuit breaker & clean-out

____________

**• PN-2 (ii) “Rug Saver”: 1974-75; 50th Jubilee 1205 (honey gold)—polished aluminum hood w/ivory bumper & Jubilee decal; 2-section wand w/ivory sheath; jade elbow

• PN-2 (iii) “Rug Saver”: 1975-77; Super J 1401, L (teal blue)—polished aluminum hood w/ivory bumper & Jubilee decal; 2-section wand w/ivory sheath; jade elbow

(so the rest of the iterations numbering would be changed)

____________

I should also mention that if a power nozzle was used for more than one model, the years may or may not match with the manufacture of the tank or canister. For example, the aquamarine green Model CB was produced only from 1965 to 1966; not '62 to '66 like the PN-1 (iii).

There was no PN3 for the same reason Microsoft never put out a Windows 9--marketing.

The PN4's with the 'half hump' were designated as PN4A, were shipped with Olympia and Silverado models and were painted to match the machine. The Silverado variant also had gray bumpers and elbows instead of off-white. None were ever released in polished aluminum finish. The only real difference between the PN4 and PN4A is the shape of the top cover. The internals and underside appear to be identical.

Power Nozzles

I think the PN 3 was a commercial version of a PN 2(same except 3 wire cord).
Among changes to PN 4s were small slots in front bumper to reduce pushing effort on some carpets and a better hold down for elbow connector to reduce cracks at its front corners.

Was/Is there something to identify the 3 row brush roll used initially in the Hospital G? I was told that later in the production and possibly including the tan G version that the nozzle used a 2 row brush roll.

Evidently the 3 row was too much torque on the motor and they burned out. My mother purchased a new turquoise Hospital G and I remember that 3 row brush roll really groomed her wool carpet and oriental rugs. I loved that vacuum.

So, was there any kind of designator in the P/N numbering system?

Thanks.

I have never seen a different designation for any of the PN-1s—neither in the U.S. or Canada—including the iterations used for the commercial C.A. or CB; and no one has ever mentioned it on Vacuumland as far as I can tell. Apparently the lack of widespread customer interest in the GH and canisters made it more cost effective for Electrolux to just retrofit the standard version. It may have been less expensive to do with the later plastic sole plates, which is why they were given their own identifications.

_______

Regarding the 'missing' PN-3, I wonder if the U.S. simply wanted to avoid confusion with the problematic Canadian PN III so chose instead to skip it. One would think that a commercial PN-3 would have been found by a collector, or that someone would have spotted one and posted a photo of it online; so I'm skeptical.

_______

As for the PN-4A, it's motor housing was made shorter—according to what I've heard or read—so that it could clean under the perimeters of lower furniture.

Additions to the Canadian list ...

• PN 2000 (ii) “Rug Saver”: 1982-85; CB2000 (two-tone gray); same as (i) but with 3-wire cord

• PN6A (v) “Omni-flo Automatic”: 1988-89; Grand Marquise 1521 & Model 90 1623; light sand gray hood w/navy bumper & label bearing Canadian wordmark; light sand gray elbow, wand latch & cord; navy switch; 2-section wand w/light sand gray sheath; (same as U.S.)

Power Nozzles

Brushes-Not sure of different model numbering but customers could often choose a different brush for their PN,even possibly a beater bar brush, for their type of carpet.Should have a chart somewhere of different brushes for PNs.
PN 3-Was just a PN 2 with slight changes.May be able to find service information.
PN 4 shorter motor housing-Was a costly change to give customer advantage of easier cleaning under furniture (as above).

* Vacuumland poster Rob “Kirbylux77” stated in one of his posts that to convert the spring-loaded wheel set-up to the fixed wheels these service numbers/parts are needed:

45347: Rug Cleaner Body - pn 7B & 1720s style
45123: Rear Wheel.Shaft Cover
45125: Wheel Shafts (x 2)
The 7B & 1720s style base is equipped with slots next to the wheels, so only the shafts and shaft cover are needed if the original has them.
