I just ran across this Youtube video (recently posted) about a boy who recently purchased a Model XXX for $30. Sadly, it is missing one of its side rails with the Electrolux name, and has been jury rigged with a new on/off switch and direct-wired cord.

I am hoping that someone with spare parts could work out something with the boy's parents in getting his machine back to its original and complete condition.

Here is his Youtube video (posted within the past two weeks):

LOL.. this kid has some great vacuums... somehow I think he'll find all the parts he's looking for and will get them at a great price. He's got it bad. Great kid!

It's times like this that I wish I hadn't had to throw out box after box of parts when I lost my workshop and then when I moved. I had dozens of those side rails and other misc XXX parts that I had stockpiled from incomplete or otherwise unfortunate machines. "But what can you do."

It sounds like air is leaking around the front cover when he presses his hand against the suction opening. I wonder if the rubber gasket on the bag is missing or hardened and cracked. If so, that should be put right because it will really affect the suction. Is he a member here?

Yeah, he is a great kid, isn't he? Sure sounds like he's a member by the way he talks, but I wouldn't know.

I, too, think "lawn boy" will be able to find what he is looking for but thought I'd give someone the opportunity to give him a hand as a nice gesture. Sure wish I had the items to give to him without having to dismantle my Model XXX.

He also owns an Olympia One, a Discovery II, and a Kirby 513 (which was given to him by a vac shop owner)--to name a few, so he's got the collecting bug. He's also proud of his 1978 Lawn-Boy which was gifted to him by his great uncle.

I know the feeling about discarding things when the mood strikes, but the next time that happens I'll try to find someone who'd want the items even if I don't.

Believe it or not, I spoke with a guy who had quite a large vacuum cleaner collection--mostly mid-century Kirbys with original bags and attachments. I don't recall the reason, but he either had to get rid of the cleaners due to space considerations or just grew tired of the collection. It may have even been that his family gave him too much grief about it (he lived at home at the time). Anyway, he actually threw the lot into a dumpster! I'd like to hope that another collector happened upon them before the sanitation worker performed his work.

Of course there are countless instances of vacuum cleaner stores pitching unwanted parts and attachments. Makes me think of alerting store owners in my region of my interest in their vintage discards. I have done that on a small scale, and it has worked wonderfully for getting free stuff and sparing the items from the landfills.

Well, I didn't discard boxes of stuff because "the mood struck me." I did it because I was forced to -- an evil new landlord who bought our building deigned to take the doors off of all the garages, one of which served as my workshop, and turn the formerly separate garages into one long, wide-open carport. I put as much stuff as I could into storage and paid over a hundred bucks a month for the storage room until I was able to rent a second garage here for a new workshop.

I would love to help lawn-boy as well. Unfortunately, the parts that I have are primarily for the last of the metal tanks - 1205 through 1521. I have 2 intact 30's, one pre-war and one post, and no parts other than a bag, which is NIB and I prefer to keep it.
