Here are some excerpts from a Model S eBay listing which may end speculation of whether the Model R began prior to 1960:


"The Manual says it is a 'Special Model'".

"The Manual says it is the World's Lightest Weight Heavy Duty Cleaner. There is writing on the back of the manual it says - Paid in full 69.75 +tax =72.19 Nov. 3 - 1960."


Wouldn't this prove that the Model R was launched not long prior to November 1960--say October?

The Model S

was introduced in 1957. It was sold until they ran out in 1960 after the introduction of the R and the G. I couldn't say which month they were introduced ,probably G in April and R in October.

The Model S

was a no frills cleaner that wasn't really thought would sell . It was a drop down model that was built well . There was no place to put a halo for the cord. The manager for the branch my father worked at said don't worry about getting a sale with it. A lot of them were sold at the same price as the model XXX was sold for. A lot better than the model T.

Options are always nice to have for customers--particularly if it allows those on tighter budgets to afford a quality product sans the extra features such as the halo.

It would be interesting to see a chart that showed the number of sales for each Electrolux cleaner--budget and standard. I wonder if sales were comparable between the two categories?

Just because a model was discontinued and another model introduced, doesn't mean the older model is gone. Most brand offices would order 100 or more of each model. The model S, as the economy model to the Automatic F's deluxe machine, was probably available for at least a year (if not two) after the introduction of the R. There were lots of folks who were still buying brand new model XXX cleaner well into 1956 and 1957, because salesmen still carried them in the car, and the branch offices had a large supply.

As an example, in January of this year, all the Simplicity and Riccar cleaners changed models. This is almost eight months later, and most dealers do not have the new models on their sales floor yet. They are still selling the 'old' models they have in inventory. This is why web sites don't change showing the 'new' models for a year or more after launch of the 'new' models.
