Hey, newbie here, I have a model g that I bought from electrolux 35 years ago. Problem is the rocker power switch does not work well. Sometimes you have to really bang it to make it work, other times not.

I've been searching online to find out how to fix this, and have come up with a couple of sites that describe replacing the rocker because it's worn, and the switch is probably fine.

Any thoughts on this? Vacuum is fine otherwise.

Thanks!

Ben

Hi Ben,

There is an aerosol Switch-Cleaner you can buy. Magic stuff. Works on On/Off Switches, Volume Controls.. Just squirt it into the switch, operate the switch a few times, and you're good to go. It flows, cleans, evaporates. No taking apart required.

If it's become a 'lazy switch', the elasticity (or springiness) has gone. Disassemble it, clean it up with Brasso, and stretch the spring gently or bend the spring-plate to restore its full movement.

There's not a lot going-on in a Rocker Switch. It's only two wires, two plates, and sometimes a spring. That's it.

If you choose to, or need to, replace it but can't find your particular colour, you can keep your original plastic Rocker & Surround and just replace the internal contacts and spring.

Electrolux Model G switch

Hi Rowdy141, than you so much for your reply. It sounds like I can take this thing apart and attempt repair, that's good news.

Can you point me to a website for disassembly? The ones I've come across mention taking it apart from the inside of the vacuum, does that sound correct?

Thanks so much for your help!

Ben

The bottom rocker may have broken one of it’s posts and fallen into the housing. Takeoff the top trim piece (three screws) It’s really easy to access the switch. I can take a better picture of one of mine when I get home from work. That switch is not a common switch. It’s more mechanical than anything else it. I don’t think a contact cleaner is going to solve the problem.

Electrolux Model G switch

Kloveland, thank you! I see the circle around the Model G, the switch I'm talking about is the power switch on the top toward the rear behind the handle.

all the best,

Ben

1. Remove the three screws.

2. Remove the switch cover.

3. Make sure posts on either side of the lower rocker are in place. Switch should move freely. The rod below to activate the switch from the bag compartment should be in the lower rocker.

I have a nicer G. The one pictured is my G I used often.

Electrolux Model G switch

Kloveland, thank you so much, this is very helpful. I'll take mine apart and get a look at it in the next few days.

Do you have any resources for parts? I've not found anything, anywhere. Seems crazy given how many Model G's are out there. I know their old, but still.....

Electrolux Model G switch

Kloveland, I removed the 3 screws and got the cover off. Everything seems to be in line and move freely. you can rock the switch back and forth, sometimes in the ON position, the motor cuts in and out, and you can see arcing inside the switch.

Any thoughts as to how to proceed? I'd buy another switch if I knew a part number or where to order it. but I've come up empty.

Or, is there a way to salvage this switch?

Thank you all for your time and responses.

Electrolux Model G switch

Update: Got the switch out, and was cleaning it and realized that a piece of the phenolic that help the little roller part of the switch go back and forth has broken. This switch is done.

So, anyone have a lead on a power switch?

Thank you all,

Ben

Mo G

Good information above.Electrolux Mo G switch and everything else is mostly trouble free.I am using a tan G that I got at a yard sale 1 block away for $10 that I only changed bag and plugged in to begin cleaning.
I do have lots of Elux parts including a high mileage G that customer took apart and then traded for better G.I consider switch to have 4 parts-button,housing,rocker,switch.Call and there should be no problem finding part you need.

Your local Aerus store should be able to get you a new genuine switch mechanism. I am almost certain they still make it because there are still so many G’s out there in everyday use and Aerus is dedicated to service. They will even come out to your house! If you can’t find the local Aerus store you can go to the website for Aerus and put in your zip code into the store locator, then call to make sure they have the switch in stock. I always prefer to use genuine Aerus/Electrolux parts for my Electrolux machines...there is a difference versus generics.

Additional models also use the same switch..likely available

Just remembered that model AE (Automatic E) and AF (Automatic F) use the identical switch so I’m even more certain Aerus will still make it. Go to www.aerushome.com and hit the store locator blue button in the top right hand corner and go from there. Aerus is the new name for the US Electrolux company once the European Electrolux decided they wanted to sell their vacuums here in the US under the same name so they bought back the name in early 2000’s and the US Electrolux company name was changed to Aerus and they still sell and service all Aerus and Electrolux products and all the parts you should ever need to keep your G running solid or add accessories, upgrade it, etc. and get genuine bags for it. Perhaps you were not aware of this change and is likely why you are having a hard time searching for a replacement option for the switch not finding “Electrolux” stores and thinking they are gone...not so though...just a name change and is still very much the same company and product. If you poke around the web site you’ll soon notice the references to the Electrolux history in the US, in fact if you hit the “about us” words on the home page on the right below the blue buttons, you’ll see the whole story to give you assurance you have landed at the right place.

Hope this helps and let us know if they help you out!

Well, based on the pics, it looks like I have a model G switch.
My dad scrapped some older Eloctroluxes a while back, and took off some parts he thought might be useful for somebody. Take a look.

I only own Electroluxes from the 1205 and later, nothing earlier.
