Electrolux hoses

I have two leaking OE Diamond J hoses that I'm going to heat shrink with 2:1 PVC clear tubing. Gonna cost about $25 with shipping for the heat shrink tubing(to do ONE). I used to buy aftermarket hoses and they held up decently. Lately, the hoses are so poor in quality that the chroming is flaking off....probably China made. 


 


Some guy on Ebay wanted a $100 for his hose. I asked him if they were China/Asian made and he flipped out on me. If I'm gonna pay over $100 for an aftermarket hose, it's not going to be from that part of the world. First he said they were made in NY, then he said later, he didn't believe they were made in the States. They look just like all the other knockoff aftermarket hoses sold on ebay. Even the higher price swivel hoses on eBay feel like they're swiveling on sandpaper. All you have to do is compare one to an OE hose.


 


Anyway, I'll report back on the shrink tubing and how it works.

After reading on here both sides to the question of restoration or replacement, I am inclined to try one repair first. Then hopefully find a used OEM vinyl hose as they become available.

But I will be interested to know of your results.

Not entirely sure but I might have a duplicate genuine Hose. The vinyl kind. Give me a few days to look around. If I do, it's yours for shipping plus whatever I paid for it, so not much

I've had good luck finding OEM vinyl hoses on eBay in the sub-$50 range. Each of my Electrolux canisters now has one.

Have you considered using Plasti Dip?

My old ratty woven hose I have been "not" using for the last 20 years was finally repaired with clear Plasti Dip. Worked well.

Kevin, I, too, would like to know how the shrink-tube repair of an older braided hose works. I'm having a tough time wrapping my brain around how you propose to do it.

The plan is to get the ends off the hose and go as far as I can with the tubing....and still be able to fit the ends back on. Originally, I though of just going from end to end with the tubing and cutting off the excess after I shrank it. Not sure the two inch tubing will slide over the canister connection.


 


Just gotta work with it. I've heard that the plastic dip does not hold up on a DD over the long term. The only disadvantage I can contemplate with the shrink tubing is that it might make the hose too rigid. The whole thing may be a bust or a compromise....I'll see.

Confession:

A while back, I sprayed Flex Seal on a leaky hose to see if it would work. It did, but the hose was less flexible....but worked.

Hey....

whatever really works and you're happy with. Lux made a lot of beautiful hoses....some say they were the best part of the color combo package. Regretfully, I've thrown a lot of original hoses away....not seeing a solid, long lasting fix. Now I'm seeing some of the vinyl, aftermarket hoses failing from cheap, overseas manufacture. I remember when I bought my Diamond J from the salesman in the 80's, with the caveat to pay particular attention to how you store the hose. Obviously, it's been an issue with Lux's for a very long time.

So many hoses, so little time...

Yeah, I've got more hoses than I do canisters to put them on, not that I plan on adding any more canisters. What's visible here is three electrified vinyl hoses, two of which are OEM and one of which is a generic, along with two woven hoses that are retired. The teal hose has the rare pistol grip on it. I'm not too picky about which of the vinyl hoses I use with what machine, it's more a matter of whatever I grab first. I actually have one more OEM vinyl hose that lives in a different closet with the Super J and a non-electrified teal woven hose that I left in the barn because it leaks like a sieve.

Those Generic hoses that don't swivel are simply Awful

I noticed recently one of the vendors selling replacement hoses mentioned that most replacement hoses on ebay do not swivel. The ones he was selling do swivel.

My generic hose swivels only a little bit, maybe 20-30 degrees, and it's fairly stiff. I prefer the OEM hoses as well.

Okay, I have a new try....

So while searching online for possible fixes, fixes that allow the beautiful weave pattern to still be seen, I had an idea and found a product that MAY work. I will try it this weekend and let you know my results.

The idea was to seal it with something clear. I found Gorilla Clear Repair. Not meant for this application, but may work.

I plan to clean the outside including 91% alcohol (my favorite) to better ensure adhesion, then experiment with an overlapping vertical or slightly slanted overlapping winding pattern.

This ought to be interesting.
