hi guys,

my mom has an electrolux e2000 with the pn2000 power head (canadian).

The power head has been used maybe a handful of times so its been sitting for probably 20+ years..but we now need to put it to use.

There are no buttons or switches on the wand or the power head so im guessing it just powers on when you plug the head into the wand, but it's not working.

At first i thought maybe the motor wasnt working so i found a cheap one for sale nearby. I went over and tried his, same result, wasn't working..it must be an issue with my vacuum or hose.

So i grabbed a multimeter and poked the leads into the hose:

With the hose attached, and the vacuum plugged in (but not running) i get 0.54a
With the hose attached, and the vacuum plugged in (and running) i get 0.8a
*whether i took readings with the electric wand attached or not, the results were the same..so the wand seems fine.

i then tried removing the hose+wand and attached my leads directly to the small metal contacts in the vacuum itself:

with the vacuum plugged in (but not running) i get 0.73a
with the vacuum plugged in (and running) i get 1.9a

What do you guys think, something is broken in the hose?

When i took apart the power head i saw no fuses, no switches. I did get readings directly at the motor (i seem to remember them being quite high but i forget, ill have to check again).

Pls help. Thanks!

I just repaired my Ambassador that I picked up recently, due to this problem. The E2000 is similar.

I had two issues, one was a bad cord in the sheath. These are readily available.

The other, issue was one of the two wires going to the hose contacts for the door was bad.

I was fortunate to have one known good working hose to test.

Power heads take 110v, so it is easy to test to make sure the motor is working.

sorry i put my readings as amps, it was all volts..so even with the vacuum on i never measured past 1.9 vac when i stuck the leads directly on the metal contacts (where the hose connects).

thanks blknblu, ill check out the wiring.

thanks guys, got it working. Once i got the vacuum open i saw that one of the electrical wires that goes from a hose contact to the motor was unplugged. Plugged it back in and it worked. This vacuum was serviced years ago, they probably forgot to plug it in..and since nobody used the powerhead since the repair, it went un-noticed. Anyway, thanks!

hey guys, i got it working but i may have spoken too soon. while it does work, the power head cuts out a lot. After some wiggling of all the areas with contacts, the issue seems to be where the flexible hose attaches to the hand grip. if i spin the hose hand grip, or wiggle that area, the head cuts out for a second and then resumes.

vacuumlad1650 i have that plastic hose you are referring to (which the issue at moment). Maybe 10 years ago when the vacuum received a new motor they also upgraded the hose.

i have a feeling i saw someone mention a similar issue. time to google.

I assume you have a swivel connector hose?

You can order just the handle. I don't know if there is a difference between one for a genuine hose and one for a generic. I can't seem to find the pics I took when I took my original one apart.

If it is a swivel, if you open it, you will find two "fingers" that touch the circular metal bands on the hose to make contact. Just inspect where they contact, it could be worn. The other technique is to bend the fingers down a little to ensure contact.

thanks blknblu. i cleaned up some contacts with steel wool and pulled the fingers like you suggested and it solved that trouble spot.

Then i noticed another issue with the electrical contacts between the hand grip and wand. After giving those a cleaning with some sandpaper I tried it out for a few minutes and didnt notice the power head cut out once, so it seems fixed. Thanks again!
