Hey, all, Well, Electrolux-Dude's at it again, Here's some pictures of my Free vacuum I picked up today. I got it from an Oreck dealer locally, and with a little work it should be a beauty! The hose is pretty well shot. It does have 2 wands and a floor brush. Anyway--Feel free to enjoy!

You really really really have to resize your pictures, they're impossible to view...
If you're not sure how to do it I suggest this simple website which does it for you, I use it, give it a try

Here's your first pic resized...took about a minute

Very nice find, Nathan.

A couple of paint chips you can fill in with coloured nail polish but mostly I see white paint scuffs that will come right off with Magic Eraser.

Great tool, Pete but since it lets you specify size you should double it and go for at least 1000 pixels wide so we can see the eyepopping detail that today's megapixel cameras produce. I use 1200 x 900 that fits my 'smallest' computer screens margin to margin.

Hey there Crevicetool Rick! What shall we call this type of paint surface effect? It's not hammertone or wrinkletone or crinkletone or sparkletone or shimmertone or stonetone or concretetone...

I offer up polishedterrazotone or speckleddimpletone...

Very nice find!

I found one at the Oreck store months ago, I wish I would have gotten it. I didn't like Compacts or Tri-Stars back then but now I love them!

Davytone......

I like Polishedterrazotone. It just oozes elegance! Yes, Polishedterrazotone it is! Just as long as we don't have to type it in that often! It's hard on the Spellcheck!

EX-20

Nathan:

Nice machine! I wish I'd found it. What you have appears to be a TriStar EX-20, the last of the Compact-based TriStar machines. Some DXL's also have the silver spattertone (silver basecoat with black speckles), so it's possible it could be that model, instead.

You have a piece missing on the bag door - the cord storage bracket. The part is No. 70009, and it comes complete with the bolt and cap nut. Until you replace it or seal its mounting hole in some way, you'll have suction problems. The bracket should be installed with a little piece of double-sided foam tape underneath it, between the bracket and the bag door lid. You just cut a little piece of foam tape, stick it over the hole in the bag door lid, and punch a hole in it where the hole in the bag door lid is. Then you put the bracket in place and secure it with the bolt and cap nut.

Your TriStar emblem is broken, so you've got holes in the body where the broken piece mounted (suction problems again)- the part is 70048. The hard plastic emblem (with push nuts) you have is NLA; TriStar now supplies a soft, self-stick emblem.

Also, it appears that your exhaust filter basket might be broken- that's the plastic part the exhaust filter mounts to. If it is, the part is No. 70014. It installs with two pop rivets, and a little bead of black RTV silicone sealant around the hole in the body, to create a seal between the basket and the vac body. You just run the bead of RTV, then pop-rivet the basket into place.

None of these parts are very expensive; the cordwinder bracket is $6.84, the emblem is $6.59, and the basket is $3.64. With these parts replaced, your vac's suction will be phenomenal. When I need TriStar parts, I order from TriStar Canada, at www.tristarvacuumscanada.com . They're much more service-oriented than any authorised TriStar service centre I've found in the U.S., and they keep parts in stock. The American centres tend to say, "We can order that for you," which gets pretty time-consuming.

Again, nice, nice machine, and I wish I'd found one of those!

Tri-star hose

Hi, Nathan. Last night I found new genuine Tri-star hoses on Ebay for $39.00. I am SOOOOO addicted to Ebay that I need rehab and a block set on my pc so I can't look at such sites. You'll love that Tri-star. I have the same one. What I do to make the house smell good, I put those Glade plug in refills in the bottom of the TS and just change it when they dry out......Bill in Az.....

Thanks to Sandy

Hey, Sandy--Thanks for your advice. I just took a look at the bottom of the machine and it's a DXL. Would you have any idea as to how old this machine is? From what I can tell the basket part doesn't look broken. It just needs the little screen part that fits over the top. About the little latch assembly at the top, it is missing that, the vacuum had duct tape over the hole. I will try to contact Tri-Star and see about the parts. That machine runs beautifully, and it's really clean inside. It's got an incredible amount of suction. The only accessories I got with it was a hose that is shot, they have duct tape all over it, and 2 wands and a floor brush. No Powerhead. But, I got the machine for free, so what I did get is really good, I shouldn't complain.

Tri-Star powerhead

With the Tri-Star, the powerhead connection to the hose is not propriety so you can use other brands of powerheads. On my TS I can use my Rainbow SE powerhead and it works great.....Bill in Az.....

Great Find Nathan !!!!!

Nathan I think the kenmore model 116 power mates clean carpet better then the original tristar power nozzles.Try using one of those on your tristar.

Nathan:

The DXL is kind of hard to date. TriStar's historical info on its Website is a little incomplete. They show the CXL as being made from 1990-92, but then they skip right over the DXL and go on to the EX-20, saying that was made 1993-98. All I can really tell you is that your machine dates from the 1990s, probably the first half of that decade. Wish I could be more help on that.

I'm glad to hear that filter basket isn't broken. It's not the easiest part to replace, and you do need a pop rivet tool, the correct size pop rivets, and RTV silicone. Be glad you don't need one, LOL. The CXL you sold me will suck the paint off drywall!

By the way, I think the TriStar power nozzle cleans at least as well as any Kenmore I've used, if not better. Of every power nozzle around here, it does the best job of fluffing and grooming, leaving the carpet looking very luxurious. It's also very quiet for a power nozzle, because there is a cast metal overlay on top of the plastic housing of the PN, which seems to soak up sound. Well worth having one if you can find it.

P.S., Nathan:

If you order parts, TriStar Canada is really the way to go. If you call TriStar here in America, they will give you the number of a TriStar authorised service centre nearest to you. Then you have to call the service centre. Then the service centre will tell you they have to order the part from - you guessed it - TriStar, which is who you called in the first place. If you call TriStar Canada, they'll take your order online or by phone and you'll get it within the week, no hassles, no calling around. Their phone number is on their website; there's a link in my first message to you on this thread.
