Hello all, been some time but decided to start with the resto projects again! For those who do not know, the Mrs. and I are expecting a little baby girl in June so I have sold a bit of my collection to help with expenses but now it is time to kick back into gear. Here are a few "before" pics...

Anybody know what the label on the machine means??? It says "Electrolux S 40470 R"

I do not know Lee Bertram...

But I do know that this machine was serviced at the old Electoluz shop "long closed" in my home town here

now this is a new one...

I am very curious as to what this capacitor like item is at the front of the motor. Can anyone shed some light onto this, and more so, does anyone know where a new one might be obtained????

I think the capacitor-like apparatus is to prevent interference from the motor to television or radio signals. Can't wait to see the after result from your restoration. I've been working on an Electrolux too, albeit a much later one.

If....

not for noise suppression, then it's a start capacitor....I'm still looking at the wiring. Simple test; remove it and see how the motor runs.

Filter Capacitor -

It's there for noise suppression - Fifties electronics were pretty susceptible to RF interference. I remember that in our house, the Philco clock-radio in my parents' bedroom could not be listened to if the Compact C-2 was being used to vacuum - you got nothing but nasty static. The blender and mixer also affected it.

I remove and leave them off

I remove those old interferance resistors thay have a tendencey to short out.with new bearings and brushes your machine should run like new,I have restored many of them machines.

-AF-

This is already above average of most AFs.Will look great when you make the outside look as good as inside.--LABEL Eluxs had serial no sticker for outside of box and machine. They should of course match the serial no stamped on machine. On yours it doesnt match perhaps because the same customer had other Lux that lost sticker and retaped to wrong machine.Anyway these were to be stuck on contract when new machine was sold as well as writing number which would show on all carbon copies. For inventory control and registering warranty.CAPACITOR Was for radio interference as described above. When I was Elux service mgr we were told to remove when servicing older machine.--your AF is later version.Earlier would have had no bumpers on door.

Thanks John!!!! Very, very excited and a bit nervous as well :) Gonna teach her the love of the vacuum at an early age of course!

Made some progress the last few nights... Motor is done and ready to go. Next will be the cosmetic resto on the body. New sealed bearing installed here...

I decided to remove the "noise capacitor" per recommendations from some fine folks here. Here is the motor, cleaned, upper busching oiled and ready to go. I hooked it up to a model L plug to test it out.
