Ian:

Who on earth was (or is) Katie Holland? Was she some sort of celebrity at the time of the advert? She looks for all the world like a younger version of Hyacinth Bucket on Keeping Up Appearances!

I think she did the OXO Adverts or something :P the Advert seems to suggest her career was doing television commercials and the like rather than actual shows.

Hyacinth would of course find Electrolux to be terribly posh, but only because she couldn't afford a Hoover (!?)

Katie...

... used to do commercial for OXO stock cubes alright - from the late 1950s until the 70s, I believe. The adverts were based around her changing life with her husband, and the hookline was that OXO gave a meal 'Man Appeal', which is always useful to know.

In her day, she was almost a celebrity, and the OXO adverts were some of the best known on TV, although bear in mind the UK only had one commercial TV channel back then.

Strange:

The OXO site says that her CHARACTER was named Katie, and that the actress herself was named Mary Holland. The OXO site shows a print advert of her as Katie, as well. Further checking on the BFI (British Film Institute) site, says that she was indeed Mary Holland, but changed her name to Katie! She also went on to do a film titled Cooking With Katie, in '73. It wasn't a series, more like an extended OXO commercial, it seems.

It looks as if she was so identified with the OXO family's "Katie" that she just decided to cut down on the confusion for everyone, LOL. She did play the part for nineteen years.

Now, can anyone tell me where she seems to have got hold of one of the Queen's old skirts to wear in the Electrolux advert? ;-)
