Electrolux 500....

Help Support VacuumLand:

That first brochure has answered a thought I had, cos I was looking at the colour of the base and the bag sections, and I noticed they were a different colour, and I was beginning to think it had been a marriage of two different cleaners, but, now I know, it's the correct colour scheme!!! How odd.... :P

I like how they say it has Triple Filtration, all I can see filterwise is there'd be a paper bag, the prefilter (consisting of a thin mesh that doesn't look very "filtery", and the scent disc pocket thing), and after that it's just free-running air filled with carbon dust, so maybe dual-filtration, but not triple... :P

Triple Filtration

I had a later 550.

The triple filtration consisted of:

1. single walled dustbag (reusable)
2. felt filter, pressed into position (later filters had integral air-freshener pocket)
3. fine gauze sealed into a cage. Phillips screw in centre, to lock in place.

The weak point in this style of cleaner was the motor; particularly the belt drive spindle, which wore down at an alarming rate, causing the belt to ride across and cut into the plastic casing. Happened to mine twice, and a few other people I spoke to. Not as durable as the Hoover cleaners.

The Hoover motors of the time could be totally disassembled if you needed to service; the Electrolux on the other hand had a sealed motor.

Electrolux 502

Hi Guys.

Really enjoyed reading this thread. I have 2 Electrolux 502 cleaners, avocado green in colour and love them. One of them is used as my main vacuum cleaner.

The machines are very quiet and light and picks up very well. I think after the 502 came the 502 super, which had a more powerful motor.

I'm quite impressed at how clean the filters came out, I was told what to clean them with and it's worked a treat, I did the Vax filter at the same time but that didn't turn out as good, but still, this Z500's filters no longer smell yucky like they did before... :)

Still need to work on the cleaning up the vac itself, I don't think it has ever had a proper service, though surprisingly the carbon brushes have plenty life left in them, just need to get the motor a new condenser capacitor, and a new cable, and some bags, and it'll be right as rain... :)
