Hi,
i just found one of these at a recently new second hand shop down my town, also purchased an Ewbank 1200 carpet sweeper. Both in great condition, next week he said hes got me a Vax upright vacuum and carpet washer, i saw the box for it but he said for me to wait cause hes going to find the washing attachments!
I was wondering if anyone on here could post some pictures of their Electrolux 170, also where all the joins are and how they are joined so that i can see if my lux is missing anything :)
Cheers,
Jake

As I wrote before, my mother was bought an Electrolux 504 as a gift in 1975. It was a most welcome and unexpected gift. This was a few years before I bought my vacuum repair shop and I didn't have much interest in cleaners then. What I do know is that mother had been wanting a new cleaner for many years and was really excited by the Electrolux 152 when it first came out in the late 1960s. It was seeing this cleaner which sewed the initial seed in my mothers head. She was using a Hoover 262 which was 2nd hand when it came to her, and she'd had it since we don't know when. It was much too big and heavy for her, and leaked a lot of dust. But it picked up well.

The thing which my mother liked most about the Electrolux 152 was that it was lightweight, and had a paper-bag, but not only that, the bag looked like it was a good deal easier to fit than any other upright at that time, as all the others seemed to use a paper-bag with a metal or rubber band to hold it in place. There was of course the Hoover Convertible, that one didn't use a band, but it was so incredibly expensive and very heavy.

For one reason and another (mainly my somewhat thrifty father) she never bought a 152. Nor a 160 which replaced it. Nor did she buy a 170, which by the time she got her 504 had been on sale for about 5 years. I saw a lot of 170s over the years I worked in my shop. They were on sale for many years and were so very popular. I have to say I do really like them, and preferred them to the Hoover Junior. There were so few hard-bag vacuum cleaners on sale when the 152 went into production, in fact I think possibly only the Hoover Convertible. After the Electrolux 152, 160, and 170, I think the Hoover Starlight was the next one. If nothing else, I think the lack of hard-bag competition was a large factor which contributed to the initial success of the 170.

My Nan bought a 152 when they 1st came out and started a bit of a trend in our family. Mum, Grandma and one of my aunts had 160's and my other aunt had a 170. My Nan they replaced her 152 with a 170 and my aunt who had the 160 bought a 170 when the 160 gave out.

I loved the 152's colour scheme and also my aunts 160 with the chocolate brown base. They were great cleaners and I think were the 1st uprights with a filter, correct me if I am wrong.

Jake, I think you'll love your 170 and can't wait for the pics. They come apart easily for cleaning and are great fun to use.
