Electrolux 1453 Special

Last week Fred called me and told me about a guy who had contacted him thru the website about donating an old Electrolux to a collector. Since I live closer, Michael and I went and picked this up last Wednesday night.
Here is this gem, a 1453 Special with PN4, purchased new 11/20/80
After a little cleaning and some polish, this is the end result.

The Money Shot

This is a neat little vacuum, it runs perfectly too! I'm not an Elux expert by any means, and this is the first one of these I have ever seen in person.

Very nice, it looks alot like the Canadian model AP280.Where is the charcoaly air filter on that one? On the Canadian model it's accessed on the top under a lid where yours has the dusting brush sitting.
I like the Eluxs because they're nice and quiet but the brushrolls are a bit wimpy. Now you need the Side Kick to go with it for cleaning those stairs, upholstery and car floors

Wow...Jeff this Lux looks like new. Is the only difference in this one and the other models the lack of the cord winder? I really like the fact that you got the book with the date of purchase. It helps give some history for the machine. And the best part...the price! Is this one going to Omaha???

The 1453 is an interesting machine. It's the last lux model I'm aware of that had the cord winder as optional equipment. Most have a rectangular painted halo. The motor is also interesting as it has a Super J motor but without the large gasket and instead has a Diamond J (model 1521) style removable mounting plate.

It's an interesting find that seems to be forgotten by most collectors and people looking to buy an older Electrolux. Its not even mentioned the company paper work that shows different past models and most after market replacement parts don't refer to it.

Anyway I'd love to find the Diamond J version of this model but it seems to be the rarest of the 3. None of them are very common regardless of version, especialy in that condition.

Silverado Special

While not called such, this was the Special model during the Olympia's production run. I have the model after this, the Silverado Special. The only difference is mine has a grey plastic cord halo on the back of the machine. They were a no-nonsense cleaner that worked extremely well. I'd love to know what the price difference was between these and the Olympias/Silverados.

I've got a few...

I've got a few of these exact same vacuums. They are just the brown, Olympia colored machines. There seems to be alot of them out this way. Not sure if its because they are Canadian and we're so close to the border or just the fact they were chaper than the Olympia. The local vac shop has had a few of the Silverado colored ones in for repair, but that's about the extent of me seeing those.

Jeff, that looks like a real nice example of that model Lux. I'm glad youare keeping it.

Hi Jeff, I was selling Electrolux back when these were in production. If I recall correctly, I believe these were 100.00 less than the Olympia, and also I remember them having less suction. Older customers liked them because they weighed less than the Olympia, and was easier to maneuver. I don't remember selling one with the optional cordwinder, because they didn't want to spend the extra money and/or didn't want to add weight to the machine. When I first started selling, I believe the Oly was 399.99 with the 1453 being 299.99.

Nice lux, what a lucky find. I have a newer silver one. It's a cool vacuum, but I'm not very impressed with the suction.
Is there a way you could post scans of the manual? Pretty please! I've never seen one for the 1453 before.

I like the 1453, nice lightweight little cleaner, I've used it a bit already, its nice, but NO MIELE by a longshot(Yes I am spoiled by the Miele)
Still the 1453 is quiet, and it has decent power. I'm itching to take it apart and have a look at the motor, it has to be smaller than the one used in the deluxe models!

Thanks for the pics. Michael and I were out at Tarantula Arms for dinner last night and were able to compare the Special to one of Fred's model L's.
The Special and the model L sound identical, same pitch and about the same suction, the special is just a bit louder sounding. I know the motor is not the same as the OLy or Silverado, those machines have a higher RPM, and definitely more power.

A beautiful machine for sure! But why would Michael be cursing it? In the picture he looks like he's actually enjoying it!! Maybe you've won him over to the wonderful world of tanks and cannisters after all--just had to find one he likes!

Not a canister person..

Thats my Michael...
He grew up with an Electrolux Super-J with PN2. His mom was very proud of that cleaner.
Today that SuperJ is in my collection.
Michael does have a soft spot for Lux because it was his childhood vacuum, but if you asked him to pick a favorite he'd probably say a Kirby, either a Dual 50 or a Heritage II. He loves Kirbys!

Jeff, If you ever consider selling that beautiful baby. Let me know! I had one like that brand new, with the cordwinder.
I sold mine in the mind 80's in my Vacuum Shop and took a
panasonic upright home to use. Have had regrets of selling it
all these years. You are lucky!
Maybe Buffalo Joe will find a decent one in his collection
that he wants to sell or trade??????
