Electrolux 1205 question

I want to know if anyone has any suggestions on what spray paint I can freshen up my vacuum.

It is in need because of minor rusting at the rear, bottom and few spots on both tops sides of the handle.

I am not looking forward to dragging it to an automotive store to find the right shade, but I may have to.

So if you have repainted yours, let me know.

I had planned to marry it up to the telescoping wand I recently found and matching PN1, but I may pair it up with and older model that just happens to have had an power cord outlet added to it at some point.

Here’s what I used...

Ok so I used either Rustoleum or Hammerite brand HAMMERED FINISH spray paints. They are tougher than the usual spray paints that chip and peel off..(made that mistake already). Prep is important, wash it down, let it dry and give it a sanding to roughed the old paint so the new paint sticks. Mask anything not removable.

I painted my Model G with a deep blue hammered paint because I wanted something that would look good with the handle and bumper which are the blue. I think it came out pretty good. Considering some of the plastic parts on the 1205 are blue, it would make most sense to go blue on the metal part, I’m assuming you are not going to paint the plastic parts and I wouldn’t recommend it.

Here’s a picture of my model G painted with the hammered blue metallic. I think it looks pretty good with the polished aluminum front and back ends, silver hubcaps and the blue bumper and handle. It was the classic turquoise originally. I think your 1205 would look sharp in it especially if your accessories are also The original blue that was supplied with the vacuum.

I painted an AF with a hammered gold finish and it came out good too, but I don’t think the gold would look good with the coloring of the plastic items on the 1205 unless you specifically want something contrasting. I’ve included a phot of that as well.

The hammered finishes are very durable.....I use them in my business outside. But, the finish is radically different than what the factory did.

If you have an auto place that sells painting product, you can have them make you some paint that would match. Auto paint while very expensive, is really tough.

As others have indicated, the big question is which route to take. If you want to have an authentic color match, an automotive paint shop is the way to go although you might luck out and find a reasonable match by going through the rattle cans at an auto parts store. But that brings me to the second option, which is a rattle can paint that will hold up well. For that, the Rustoleum hammer tone paint and primer in one can't be beat, even though your pallet of available colors is fairly limited. As Jon mentioned, surface prep is everything but the results are outstanding.

I repainted a scarred-up Electrolux PN-4A shell a couple of years ago with the hammer tone black, which is actually more of a gunmetal gray and a bit darker than the Silverado gray I was covering up. The texture built up with each thin coat I applied and what I ended up with looked very professional, not at all like a typical rattle can job, and the textured finish hid a world of sins. If you aren't too worried about retaining the original color, this is definitely a viable and cost effective option.

I was out running errands today and found myself parked nose-to-nose with a teal Mini Cooper that was pretty close to the color of a 1205. The base coat-clear coat finish was a whole lot shinier than a 1205 and maybe a shade or so deeper but I couldn't help but think that it would work well for that application. And with just the base coat, it might even be a closer match. Anyway, I just thought I'd offer that as a possible starting point for a paint search.

Just checked this here Friday. Unfortunately, I have packed up the 1205 for now.

I believe I have both the blue and gold hammertone paints. The blue I had to order as no where locally did that have blue...light blue.

I actually bought a G which had been refurbished by Electrolux a couple of years back. Just noticed it when I installed a new shelving unit to store my vacuums.
