Hello. I picked up a good-ish shape electrolux model 1205 off the street. I have done some very basic poking around on it, and I am wondering what my next step should be.... Here are the details:
1. When plugged in, there is no evidence that anything is happening. No light, no motor, no sound, nothing. Moving the on/off switch back and forth does nothing. I put a bag in and still nada. Moving the dial on the front -same result - zip.
2. I pulled off the winder, and there is power at the terminals leaving the winder.
3. The terminal block for the winder looks good - no evidence of melting or heat.
4. No power at the on/off switch.
5. The on/off switch works fine.
6. The switch that detects whether the door is closed and a bag in place is also OK.
7. There is no hose, but that shouldn't make a difference.

So, what is my next step? I could not find a wiring diagram, which would be helpful.

Thanks, Owen

Definitely check all the wires. I find the on and off switch is get old , test it with an ohms meter. I would also test it with another cord directly where the cord reel connects if you understand how the circuit works in there. When all else fails bring it to your local vacuum store.

With the cord winder assembled, is there power coming out of the terminal block on the winder? Anyway, you're on the right track, keep poking it.

Assuming you have a test light or multimeter, connect one lead to a known-good white wire (common/ neutral), and use the other lead to test all other points, find the wire that's farthest (electrically speaking) from the cord with power. You'll find the break. If everything has line/ hot power, switch the leads, and test for the break in the common/ neutral power.

In other words, keep chasing the power until you find the break.

Owen,

Open the bag compartment. There is a switch on the door, that will not let you power up the vac if there is not a bag in it. The switch failed on my machine, I replaced it and the machine worked perfectly

Check the terminal block on the inside of the case that the cord reel presses up against. Those were famous for melting down.

There are two wires coming from the motor, you should see them running to the terminal block, if you jumper those two wires with a test lead does the motor run?

There is also a terminal block inside the front bag door that the bag lockout switch and the terminals for the power nozzle connect to. The bag lockout switch could be dirty or bad. The early bag lockout switch was a slide switch the later bag lockout switch was just a spring contact.
