Electro Hygiene Deluxe

Hi, Proud to say this is the first vacuum in my collection! It was my grandparents and it's been sitting in the garage for decades. It's pretty rusty inside but still runs and at least has a decent exterior! I took it all apart and cleaned it all up to the best of my abilities. (I'm 16) As you can tell it's missing some parts, like the other wand and most the attachments. So i'm kind of new to this. Any pointers? Thanks!

ps. My other grandma has a couple of Electroluxes!

I'd say you've done quite a good job of restoring the cleaner. If you are looking for wands and other attachments, you may want to try your local vacuum cleaner repair.shops, as the design.for.those attachments carried over to later Royal models made as recently as 2000. One example of a similar Royal model.would.be the 404, and several commercial straight-suction tank cleaners made during the 1990s. Hope this helps, and good luck.in your search!

Hey Connor! Welcome to the club. Another fellow young collector! I am 18. I have around 40 machines. A lot for the space that I am limited to! But they just kept coming in, and with friends that vacuumland offer, they just keep flowing!

Those are my dads radios. I also collect video games and we both share a pretty good sized collection of records. I'm in McPherson so we got to go out of town for a vac shop. I found an attachment set online but 70 bucks! And thanks for saying it looks good! Took a lot of elbow grease!

Hi Conner,

That's a nice Electro-Hygiene you have there, and a great machine to start your collection with! I can tell you it's a model 966, which was made from 1953 to 1983, and yours is one of the first, as it has the original cloth (saran?) hose, no bumper on the rug nozzle, no bumpers on the side trim, and the switch button and upholstery nozzle are gray. Later versions of the 966 had a red switch button, blue attachments, blue indestructable vinyl hose, and bumpers (guards) on the rug nozzle and side trim. The rest of the attachments would include a dust brush, floor brush, crevice tool, sprayer, felt polishing pad that snaps on the rug nozzle, and upper wand.
The fact that it was your Grandparents vac makes it even more special! One of my most prized vacs is a model 82 Hoover Constellation that my Grandfather bought for my Grandmother for their last anniversary before he passed away.

Thanks for all the info, wondered what that lever did on the nozzle. My grandparents did get married in the early 50's and this was a wedding present.

My grandpa was a funny man. You can tell where all the duct tape was on the hose, and sense it's a cloth hose it was "fun" to get off, took a lot of goo gone!

He didn't put bags in it either (when he started using it as a "shop vac") so the cloth bag in it was horribly dirty. (it even has rust stains!)

My other grandpa sold Electroluxes in the 70's but the 2 my grandma have are from the 40's-60's. Can't wait to visit her!

You have a model 950 or 966 (most likely the 966). The 966 replaced the 950 in the early 1950s, and continued to be sold through about 1980. Royal also had the 931 Deluxe Power Tank from 1965 to 1980.

Both could use the Royal 497 or 597 (which replaced the 497 in 1980) power nozzles starting from 1974.

Conner! Really nice start for this hobby.

The chrome looks sensational and the vacuum sounds like it has a lot of suction. A lot of us prefer Mother's Metal polish and elbow grease....what did you use? Do those vacuums accept an electric PN? Ask your other grandma if she'd like to contribute one of her Electroluxes to your collection.

Just generic chrome polish, and electric PN? It just had a standard cord hooked up to the motor.

And as I said before, your Electro-Hygiene is definitely a 966, and an early one at that. The 950 was a much different machine, had clamps at top & bottom on the front end instead of being hinged, had a squared off back end, and runners instead of wheels.
Good looking machine and sounds great! The rust on the inside of the front cover can be cleaned up with steel wool and a good polishing compound, such as Mother's Mag, but don't use it on any painted parts. For rust on painted surfaces, use automotive rubbing compound.

Power Nozzle

The power nozzle wasn't available for Royal or Electro-Hygiene until 1974. When it was introduced they put an outlet in the back end bell to connect it.
The lever on your rug nozzle controls the strip brush to either free float or lock out in the upper position.
