I recently found an absolute treasure trove of an old book. It is titled "Electrical Appliance Servicing", By William H. Crouse, published in 1950. Over 800 pages of information on all sorts of vintage appliances, including many photos as well. I hope to scan and upload the entire book online one day, as I believe there's an enormous amount of history in it that needs to be archived.

For now, however, please enjoy these photos of the chapter on vacuums.

Pic 7 is a Cadillac. I've never had a cylinder model. It's hilarious how they just used an upright's motor and housing assembly.

Ah, 1950. When men had more oil in their hair than the appliances. I should share a DIY house repair book I have from the early 90s. It shows how to repair vacuums in this same way - but 80s model vacuums.

Awesome Find!

We used to have that same book in my electronics class in high school, and referred to it frequently when someone brought in appliances for repair. Interesting how similar the GE and Westinghouse uprights look when you see them side by side! The Regina appears to be a model 59, and I have both a 59 and 39, with attachments for both but only have one wand and one suction coupler between the two sets. My 59 doesn't run. The Lewyt appears to be a model 40, and I have one of those as well. My Westinghouse upright is similar to the one shown, but with a different bag. Here are pics of my Regina 39, Westinghouse F1-46, and Lewyt 40.
