I won an item on ebay. It arrived at my post office. I got a notice that there was additional postage needed. I went to the post office and was told that they had to open the box. It was described as "media", ie: books. imagine when they opened the box of books and found a Hoover sweeper!!!!!I paid the postage. I then contacted the seller. Her response was" Oh no, I don't know what to do" I didn't know it was mis labeled. MY responsorial psalm was" Well, I think you should reimburse me the additional postage OR I'll leave negative feedback. i'd hate to, but, I WILL. Now, we'll see what she does.

Do it!!! I'm dealing with the same thing over here. Bought & paid for something then get a email saying he couldn't send it then he relisted it for more $$$$, called ebay & PayPal since the charge is still on there & email says it was shipped after it's been cancelled so we shall see.

Perhaps these accounts are a lesson to all eBay buyers: Prior to bidding ask a lister how he or she will pack and ship an item; and make requests if needed. In any event both sellers and buyers share equal responsibility in a transaction. In a perfect world one would be able to trust that a seller would both pack and send an item appropriately, but we live in an imperfect world.

I found this out with eBay when I purchased something that came in its original box. I 'assumed' that the seller would pack the box inside another and therefore did not request it. Well, to my chagrin the item's box became the shipping container with tape and labels which has diminished its value as a collector's item. While I'd like to put the complete blame on the seller, I must accept equal responsibility. Not everyone considers an item's box as valuable; in fact, I have damaged or discarded my share of boxes with logos, artwork, et cetera over the years, as well.

Regarding the extra postage required for John's package one needs to consider the dishonesty of some individuals who would fabricate such a story; albeit I am not suggesting that John did this. I'm just trying to shed some light on a seller's perspective. I wonder if there is a way for a seller to find out via tracking information if an item did, indeed, need more postage? If not, then a scanned copy of the postage receipt from the buyer--along with identifying information that confirms its authenticity--should be sent to the seller.

Additionally, I personally prefer to give the seller an opportunity to rectify a situation before mentioning negative feedback which may indicate dishonesty on the buyer's part.

I do hope John's and Mark David's situations will have satisfying outcomes for them.

I do too, but it's so dishonest to do what some people do on there. I had a feeling it was going to happen to me, it's not my fault you put in a very very low buy it now price then after it's bought tell a lie, send out a dispute then relist the item inflated. Glad I saved everything & forwarded it to Ebay & PayPal. They said this isn't first & won't be the last.

I agree.

At the point of sale, postage was included. The discovery for MORE was determinmed at the post office. I have the receipt and the bill, and the original paperwork.I'd have considered returning it, but it was the LAST "Convertible:. Can't pass that up.
Sending her the dirty bag is nasty, (entertained it for a millisecond. but, I deal w/ too many nasty people. I don't want to stoop to that level and become one, myself.

You're right: I HAVE given her the golden opportunity to ensure positive feedback.
Thanks for the advice.
John

Just ship me your finest HOOVER, I'm sure that's fair trade.....

Only kidding! Just post a picture of your finest Hoovers, that seems fair! Be sure to include private label machines, especially Montgomery Ward!

And P.S- you expected dirtyness when there's Hoovers about? Even the chat stays spring-fresh thanks to the patented 'beats, as it sweeps, as it cleans' action! Remember, 'HOOVER', fine appliances around the house, around the world, around vacuumland!

Postage rates

I assume from this discussion that there are different postage rates for different articles, 'Statesside'..??.. Here in the U.K. there is a special low rate for newspapers ONLY, which just have a label affixed, and cannot be covered/sealed. We USED to have a lower postage rate for postcards (which by their nature are not sealed and can be read by anyone) but that disappeared years ago (not sure when... Must look it up sometime). Everything else is charged at the same (very high!!) postage rate. :-(

Hope this is of passing interest

Dave!

Yes, we have different rates. We have "postcard" rates, "media"... books, educational materials, etc, flatrate, bulk rate, air mail, and our "forever stamps"..... you can use them "forever" even when/if the rates increase.
The seller tried to pass this HOOVER off as "media", and charged that postage. The Post Office opened the box.. saw a vacuum cleaner, and increased the rate. SHE was not happy when I suggested she refund the difference or discover NEGATIVE feedback. (I was in just the right mood for it that day). She got good feedback, not stellar, but enough to keep her happy and to keep my blood pressure down.

When shipping vacuums through the post office, Parcel Select is the proper way to ship it. It's lower than the other rates (like Priority). Perhaps the reason the post office opened John's package was due to the weight. Media Mail is for DVD's, magazines, etc. The weight of a Hoover would have been a red flag for Media Mail. The seller KNEW she was sending the vacuum Media Mail, as she had to tell the post office what she wanted when she took the package in.

Many eBay sellers are deficient in knowledge of how to pack something. Whenever I buy an item that includes the original carton I ALWAYS insist the item be shipped in a "master carton" to prevent the original box from becoming damaged. Had that happen with a Compact - the seller shipped it in the original carton. The original box was of course "not as described" after the shipping labels and smashes. I filed a complaint with eBay and the seller (to his credit) refunded the entire shipping cost.
