If you happen to have 800 extra clams laying around you might be interested in using them to purchase a Model XXX with its original carton w/tool packing tray, literature (owner's guide, guarantee slip, pre-war price ad @69.75), original XXX patterned hose, 2 steel wands, rug cleaner, floor brush, dusting brush, upholstery cleaner, narrow space cleaner, sprayer, and vaporizer.

It's a '49-'51 due to the 535-watt motor, gray bottom, and gray bumpers on the tools. I have a '52 with the turquoise bottom and tool bumpers.

It's a logical assumption that the hose on this "mint never used" XXX is as stiff as petrified wood. Look at how dry and cracked the rubber bumpers on the rug and floor nozzle are, and the bumper on the dusting brush is completely disintegrated. The hose is very faded -- the background color should be much darker gray and the black and white tracing should be very bold in contrast. See attached photos.


 


Quite some years ago an XXX in beautiful condition was listed. It literally looked like it had just come from the factory. The box was perfect and completely intact. Bidding went crazy on it, especially back in those days. When the winning bidder received the machine, he discovered to his extreme dismay that the hose was completely hardened into a permanent loop. It was so fossilized that he couldn't even pull it out straight.


 


So... buyers beware!!

Bought 2 -- stored one in attic

This is one NICE Mo XXX!The description seems honest and accurate.Even though every part looks NEW it would be a very slightly used vacuum.The bag compartment is very slightly dusty as is the after filter.I see a bit of lint on the floor brush.It could be that the Electrolux office got a call from Dr. X saying'send over 2 new Electrolux to our new home'.If a salesman delivered one that was shown but not sold it would still be a new vac just as a car at the car dealer with 15 miles on it would be new.Or this one might have been demoed to the Dr and then placed in attic.And the years in the attic would not be the best for the rubber or cardboard(the most badly worn items) but could have kept everything else in new condition.And the hose does seem to be stiff.My oldest white canvas & rubber Hoover hose and my green Westinghouse Mobile hose are both stiff and both rare parts of my personal collection.
I have seen the 'buy two-store one'result at a local estate sale with small kitchen appliances and have read that in the early days of fame Sonny and Cher would but 2 of different items with what was then the most money they ever had.
So,a common vac in very uncommon,complete(except for lost cord)and RARE condition with an even more rare piece of sales literature!!

The sales demo book would be the only thing 'rare' about that machine. The stiff hose is probably unusable. I'll bet (but cannot say for sure), the rubber cord literally fell to pieces as they took it out of the box - so they have conveniently 'lost' it. The entire rubber bumper on the dusting brush is missing.

Another scenario that might have happened - the doctor bought this from a (perhaps) Elux salesman/patient. Brought it home. Wife (or maid or both) did a little dusting with it (if that). Most probably they already had a Hoover and didn't like the tank.

Stan Kann (a name ALL vacuum collectors should know) detailed the mother of a friend who owned a Lux 12 (and eventually, a Lux 30) who borrowed her sister's Hoover 700 twice a year, because she thought the Lux didn't get the rug very clean, but thought the Hoover was very hard on the rug - but did get it clean.

Former VCCC board member, Clay Floyd, told the story of his own mother who bought a Lux 30 only to be very disappointed it picked up no threads or hair on the rug. She went immediately back to her Hoover 150, declared the Lux to be 'worthless' and returned it. These folks might have been disappointed as well, and put it in the attic.

In any event, the heat from the attic did the cleaner no favors. The rubber motor mounts MAY be dry rotted, making the machine almost useless. In My Opinion, the words "New in the box" might come back to haunt the seller, as the buyer (after realizing the heat of the attic rendered the machine useless) has the right to return the cleaner as "not as described".

If that Lux or other unwanted cleaners were stored in a closet in the house-exposed to conditioned living environment-they probably would have been fine.These should NOT be stored in the attic or garage or unconditioned basement.
