Early Hoover uprights -- the 541, 105 and 102 and maybe earlier ones as well -- have a speed control adjustment inside the motor housing so you can speed up or slow down the motor. (See link)
Someone asked me why that feature was incorporated and, you know, I had never really thought about it. Anyone know the reason? The only thing I can think of is perhaps to compensate for variations in voltage.
I keep my 541 on the lowest speed just because it purrs so sweetly and softly! I have a fun trick I like to play on people who are not familiar with old vacuums -- I'll pull out my 541 and say, "Look at this old dinosaur from the early 1920s! You want to hear it run? Okay, but it makes a pretty fearsome racket. Better put your fingers in your ears!"
Then I plug it in and with great drama step up and gingerly flick the switch. The person nearly always cringes and squints their eyes expecting a tremendous racket, then looks with great astonishment when they realize how quiet it is! Then they nearly always ask, "But does it work?" So imagine their greater astonishment when I run it across the rug and they can hear dust and dirt clinking around the brush roller, through the fan and into the bag!!
