I would like to get an early Electrolux that have the runners instead of wheels. I have all hardwood floors, will the runners scratch the floors?

If you drag the machine across the floor, then yes....it'll scratch the floor. If you pick it up and move it, then it wont.

Wrapping

I could probably wrap the bottom of the runners with felt or Styrofoam but that would take away the vintage look that I like.

Hmmmmm

Cute idea! I bet it would work, I could find a u shaped bracket to go over the runner and screw or bolt it to the skate board.

If the runners on the Lux are in good shape, I don't believe they will scratch the floor. I use my model 30 here and have never had a problem. If you have soft pine floors you may have to be more careful. People worry about hardwood, but it actually takes a lot to scratch them. I even use it in the kitchen which is ceramic tile, no scuffs there either.

Just my two cents.

Once...

my Olympia One was sick when it came time to do the house cleaning. I have other machines that have not yet been restored, but decided to use my Super Chief, made by Landers Frary & Clark (Universal). I picked it up and set it down each time I ran out of hose length. (In my case, I didn't want to scratch the runners!!!) I think I preferred it! When it's on wheels, I seemed to do a quicker, perhaps not as effective job. I did repair the Olympia One though, ain't got time to do that good of a job.

Actually, Electrolux runners will -not-scratch floors. Not even the early flat-bottom versions. If the runners are rusty, they can leave "skid marks" but will not scratch.

Thanks Guys...

For your help. Now I just need to decide on which one to get. I will probably use it in my bedroom upstairs, so I can put the power head back on the Kirby.

Decisions, Decisions, Decisions.

What you need is to go to the dollar store and get a package ofthose self-stick little felt pads that you stick on the bottom of chairs and table legs etc to stop them scratching floors and making them easy to slide.. They come in all sorts of different shapes and sizes, big ones, little penny and quarter sized ones, square ones, long ones.
