This is just for fun. I got carpet from my old house that came from the guest bedroom. First I used my Dyson and dumped the bin until I got no more dirt. Then I got out my Hoover Anniversary Convertible. The DIRT FINDER light came on and stayed on and I got almost as much as the Dyson had taken out. To be fair, the Hoover is much more agressive and I would not use it on good carpeting. The Hoover is also the WORST bagless machine to clean out.It is interesting results. A lot of the dirt the Hoover got was "fuzz" but also there was a fair amount of sand and grit on the paper too.
Maybe I should try the Compact now and see what I get!

If you want to keep with the spirit of the testing theme, you might try out your Lux with the black cloth again!

If you're curious to test out a different cleaning action, try out a Hoover with a beater bar if you've got one.

Could make it even more interesting and try a straight-suction canister!

Someone stop me!

Eric,
You perked my interest so I used the Air-Way with the power nozzle and beater bar. I ran out of test clothes before I ran out of dirt. This machine has never seen "real" dirt in the bag so I used test clothes. 2 swipes and the test cloth was filled with grit and sand.

convertible........

are the Convertible bagless vacuums any good? I thought they were kind of cool, but I CANNOT STAND those filters on them.

OMG AIRWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

arghuoruna;iunjabv'!!! what ever that means. Nice airway!!!! They never changed the design!??? It looks like my 88 without a PN!

When was that one made? And what model is it? Is airway still making them? How much?

Chase,
I liked the color comb of the Convertible. The brush roll is way too stiff for me. The bagless set up is terrible.
It is not as loud as the Anniversary Windtunnel. It does have a heavy feeling when you vacuum. I was told they were trying to copy the color of the 50th Anniversary but I might be wrong.

Ryan,
This is the 80th Aniversary Signature Series Air-Way. It was a numbered series. Mine is #8 off the line in 2000. It has very nice paint and trim. The Air-Way was like the older Hoovers and Lux's. They just had good design and didn't need to change just for change sake. The power nozzle makes the grit jump out off the carpet.

PN

That looks like a Kenmore Whispertone canister PN- the older style before they went to curved lights.

Here is the old Compact Straight suction. Still getting sand and grit just not as much after the Dyson,Hoover,Air-Way.

Fascinating results, Rob and lovely vacuums. Never tire of pictures.

I find that when I go back to the first vacuum used in such a test I'm still picking up dirt. Nothing like old - and new - carpet to stockpile the raw material we covet for any opportunity to keep playing with vacuums, eh?

Dave, ducks & runs. LOL

Here is the last machine I used. I am not a Rainbow fan but I was surprised at how much sand and grit the others left in the rug. Remember this was a guest bedroom and I had already used a new Dyson, new Hoover Convertible,Air-Way and Compact. Then alone comes my Rainbow which I got about 1993-4. Check the next picture out.

Check out the bottom of the vase. Look at all the sand and grit that the old Rainbow got out. I have always been told by several of the older vac club members that the Rainbow may not have the strongest suction and may not be fastest in picking up in Consumer Reports but 6 months or a year down the road the customers house will be cleaner just because every time they use the Rainbow it cleans like a new machine and no bags, filters or bins to clean out replace.I was surprised at the amount of fine grit and sand.
