Dyson Issues

My mothers Dyson isn't picking up surface litter like it should. Now, being a Kirby buff, I know pretty much nothing about Dysons. Do they have belts that need to be replaced every so often? If so, are they hard to change? She said she has checked and cleaned all the filters on it. She says it's not grooming the carpet like it used to and surface litter is not being picked up. Any ideas?

Yes the Dyson's do have belts or some sort of drive system, but if memory serves me correctly they are very expensive to replace and have to be done by an authorized Dyson dealer.

Perhaps the brush is getting worn as well, while you have it being repaired you might want that checked as well.

One thing to check is the pivot point on each side of the agaitor head, I had one of these pop out of place. And it would hardly pick up anything.

This is an obvious trouble-shooting point: Is the selector in the bare floor position?

It depends on what model you have... If it is a DC15, 17, or 18 they have direct drive systems. If it is a DC07 or 14 WITHOUT floor selector you can replace the belt yourself they are cheap about $5AU. If If has a floor selector you actually need to send it in as Dyson have special techniques and tools to change those belts... Ahhh gotta love work experience for school

The problem was...

a CLOG.. in fact, not just one, but many. My dad had to take the unit out his shop, break it down - including the cylinder, and had to get the air compressor after it all.. it wasn't sucking due to the accumulation of pet hair and dander (They have a pet Pomeranian). Needless to say, they never had that problem with their Kirby Heritage that I was able to save from going to the dump! They bought the Heritage brand new back in 1981 and only replaced the fan once, and the foot switch after 20 or so years. They took it in to the shop every two years for a $30.00 tune up and it still runs like a champ to this day - may not look as pretty as a new shiny Dyson but it still can serve its purpose!
