Dyson dc59 Motorhead

It finally arrived today! My new Dyson dc59 Motorhead, the culmination of three years of teetering on the edge of buying a cordless vac from one of the most controversial vacuum brands out there. It is most certainly too early to definitively judge this machine, but first impressions are very good.


Here are some unboxing and initial views of the machine and it's tools, along with a size comparison with my recently found dc16. Further down I will add some initial tests I did and report on my first few uses with it.

Nice Dyson

The DC59 looks great. I just got a DC44 Animal this week and I am very impressed. I got it for $288 at Kohls after tax with a 20 percent off coupon and $10 off purchase. I may upgrade to a DC59 eventually. Enjoy using it!

Nice, noot too keen on the colour though, LOL much prefer the colour of the DC44 and 59, but nice machine! How does it perform compared to a DC59 if you tried one?

It's first run

For the first run of this cleaner I really wanted to do a semi-scientific test of one of this machines biggest claims. Stated proudly on the box, not to mention most other advertising for this cleaner, is this machines claimed ability to out clean the highest selling cleaners currently available. Namely, the eureka airspeed gold, hoover windtunnel air, bissell cleanview, and finally, the Shark rotator profesional lift away.


I have had my shark for almost 2 years now and have found it to be a very good upright. The claim that this tiny dyson could out clean the shark was intriguing to me, so I decided to do a very semi-accurate test for fun.


I chose a fairly high traffic room in our house whose carpets get regularly soiled. I first vacuumed the entire carpet with the shark (note, it's filter had been cleaned recently) not going particularly slow and only really covering the room once. I then ran the dyson over the room, being sure not to clean under or around anything I had not with the shark, and compared the results.


 


As you can see, the room was actually quite dirty to start with, which was a shock to me (it's only a nine by twelve room) But the dyson did manage to lift a considerable amount of sandy dirt. Overall, not concrete proof by any means, but interesting.

MMMM I have a dc62 which by all accounts is the same machine with a different cleaner head, Still my most used vacuum at home, I loved my dc35 but this was so much better and I am always amazed at the fluf and pet hair it pics up even after the room has been vacuumed.

I really can see myself using this machine frequently. I forgot to mention that for about a year and a half we have had a dc44 at work, and although it was not a stellar seller, the floor model has become the go to machine for cleaning the store. It has taken in tons of dirt, dust, hair, bird seed, etc and has retained suction and performance while being extremely easy to use. I end up using it every time i'm there, and it was the machine that convinced me to order this finally.


Gareth, it's interesting how the model numbering system differs between countries. I mainly chose the motorhead model for the extra brush head power, and I know it will get used tons in my house.

It looks like a rather puny amount of dirt picked up by the Dyson. But no, it is not even close to a scientific test. Why do "vacuum experts" continue to post results from these meaningless tests where the last vacuum wins because it picks up dirt that the first missed. there's always dirt in your rug. You have no idea how efficient the Dyson is in picking up dirt compared to even this lowly Shark because you didn't run a meaningful test. Sorry.

I thought I had made it clear that I know full well that this is not a scientific test by any means. I did it mostly to have a little fun with my new cleaner and because I wanted to see what would happen. Yes the dyson did not pick up much dirt, but the dirt that it did get was grittier than the majority of the lighter soil like dirt the shark got. I'm sorry that my explanation as to the lack of the validity of this test was not clear.

It made perfect sence to me. It was just a quick self test. I am amazed at the pet hair my one picks up even after I vacuum with my G5.

Cool Dyson!

This machine would be great for everyday cleaning of high-traffic areas, especially if you have a pet that sheds a lot. One problem I've seen is that the battery life is a bit short at 24 minutes. To me that doesn't seem long enough to do an entire house.

Like Parwaz786, I'm not too keen on the color of this Dyson. I'm not a big fan of pink.

I, too, like to do these semi-scientific vacuum tests. A couple of months ago, I did a very similar test between two $100 vacuums: a Hoover Windtunnel and a Eureka AirSpeed. The Eureka pulled out more dirt than the Hoover did. The Eureka has since been given away, and is no longer in my possession. I linked a Vacuumland thread that discusses my test and results.

I have never been a fan of Dyson, but that is actually a very cool little cleaner! I remember how much I liked using my aunt's DC 16 a couple summers ago when we visited her. I used it out in the shop when we were turning pens on the lathe, it just ate those wood chips without any trouble! 


 


ralph123, I don't think you understood the purpose of his test. The reason singingrainbow posted this thread was purely for our enjoyment and consideration, not for you to start bashing people and their vacuums.

Update

Well, after having this machine for about 2 weeks I have a confession. I haven't used a corded vacuum since. This machine cleans very well on all surfaces. The picture is of what it picks up on an average run through the house. I have also found it great for above the floor cleaning, it's so light, well balanced, and it has great tools which work wonders on just about anything. I have found that I actually prefer using the machine with the brush/crevice too off of my dc39 as opposed to the included tools. This is mainly down to how I use it, I always use the small powerhead on the furniture to remove pet hair which means I only need a brush and crevice tool to do the rest of the cleaning, this allows me to carry around less when moving through the house. I have cleaned things that have been overdue for a long time thanks to how nice it is to use. 


niclonnic, I have found the battery life perfectly good to cover the main areas of my home in one go (and by most of the house I mean all but two bedrooms out of a 3200 sqft house), along with doing above the floor cleaning. I do agree, the color is my least favorite part.


Also, if the machine runs out of power while cleaning above the floor, I can whip out my dc16 to finish the job.


 


If there is one thing I can say about this machine, it is that dyson have nailed cordless vacuums.

I feel the same way about my one and I too use the combo tool off my 37/39. I also got a hose for mine and that makes it very handy for using as a dusting machine. I must agree with you Scott dyson has really got the cordless vacuum sorted. We sell allot of these now to people with small upmarket condos as their only vacuum. We nick name them the Audi TT crowd as they are those young hip happening ones who live in beach front appartments and mostly drive Audi TT or Merc SLK. They come in and buy 2 things a Dc62 ( our code for it ) and a Am05

That's good to hear that the 24-minute runtime works for you! Plus, having another cordless vacuum is very convenient, especially if you run out of juice in the middle of a cleaning session.

Dyson does make some awesome cordless vacuums! If I had to get a new Dyson, I would get the DC65 Animal. It has hundreds of awesome reviews.

25 minutes of run time? I could never live with that, it'll be a spring cleaning disaster! Maybe it'll work in a small apartment with just floors, but when you need to do dusting, furniture, floors, crevices, carpets and who knows what else, you definitely need a cord!

I have the Dyson DC59 and really enjoy it! I like being able to zip through the hardwood floors on the main level if my partner is using the central vac with Hide a Hose on the furniture or rugs. I think Dyson has done a great job with their cordless vacs and some of their tools. However, I got rid of the Dyson DC41 and the DC65 I replaced it with because using them with tools is an absolute nightmare. They both did well on rugs but I found them difficult to steer on hardwood floors and the lack of a nice hand grip for hose use was a big negative...especially at $600. I replaced the DC65 last week with the new Shark Rotator Powered lift away and that thing is AWESOME! I had a rotator before and this one is definitely an improvement. I love being able to get under coffee tables and beds with the lift-away feature!

I am glad you are enjoying the DC59. I am madly in love with my DC44 after these first couple weeks. I am thinking I will upgrade to the DC59 eventually. This is my first Dyson vacuum ( I do have an Air Multiplier that I LOVE) and I have been so impressed. The head layout is small enough that the suction the machine creates is plenty to clean a floor very quickly. On boost mode, it picks up the ends of my area rugs!!! The attachments are great and I love the mini motorized head for my upholstery and car. I filled up the bi completely the first time I used it to clean out my car.

I would strongly suggest that those who have not tried a Dyson cordless but feel the need to uselessly comment against it to try one of the machines. My house has been cleaner since I got my DC44. My wood floors are always shiny because anytime there is a mess, I can just grab the Dyson off the laundry room wall. It has never ran out of charge before I finished a job. And by the way, it is not a replacement for a full size vacuum cleaner - although I will admit, I have not needed anything else in my day-to-day cleaning tasks with the Dyson.

Another thing that I forgot to mention, we will be ripping up most of the carpets in the next month (thank goodness!) in favor of engineered vinyl plank flooring, which is another reason I felt this would be a prudent investment.
I'm still loving it, and finding it more difficult to justify pulling out something with a cord during the week.

I just got my DC59 Motorhead at Best Buy with $110 off on sale.

I broke in the battery by running it on high the first 4-5 cycles and letting it die before charging again. It now runs longer for me, but as others have said, 25-30mins max on high (on a good day).

I actually found the unit SO strong on high that for my many small area rugs for which I use it on mostly, it pulls them up into the air a bit and always stops the brushroll immediately at almost every pass to save the motor. I have therefore evolved into using it on low speed at all times, and it is PERFECT! I get double the battery life and it's still as strong as can be on all carpet types (including medium-high pile).

I absolutely love the unit for small jobs, namely hardwood and area rugs, and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a cordless unit with the same usage needs.

I have the 44 animal and damn did it make life easier here! I seldom drag out other machines unless I am doing a big clean, it works that well. Hardwood floors and short nap room rugs, works perfect for these things anyway. With my back problems, life is better! I clean anytime I see something, done in a minute.
